You could make a macro that saves the drawing first and then runs save as right after. That would make it work as you want. As far as that making it better, I'm not sure I would want it to work the way you want so it's just preference not broken. I can't think of any other program that save as works that way besides the one you mention and I only have minor experience with that program so I don't even remember how save as works in it.

when I create a drawing i'll save it and instead of starting a new drawing from scratch i'll just do a save as and use that drawing. but what im running into is when I go back to the original drawing it doesn't save what I did. when I was using microstation I had each drawing to do a save every time I exited the drawing saving everything I did. does autocad have that same feature, cause I keep getting screwed over by this save as command not saving the work I did and I have to go back and redo everything. getting very angry.

The saveas command doesn't do both: save the current drawing and open a new drawing with the same content.

It only creates a new drawing with the current content. The current drawing includes the content when it last was saved.

If you want to save the current state too you must first run the save command. Then you can run the saveas command to begin a new drawing (with the same content).

cadder

that's what I do but some times I forget and it really screws me over. this is one area where autocad sucks compared to microstation. when you do a save as it should save the file youre doing a save as from. get on the ball autocad.

I too have not used any software that saves to the original file when I do a "save as". If AutoCAD or any other program did this, it would be undesirable.

I would say that MicroStation has it wrong on this one.
