Copy and Paste to match scale of drawing, explanation for a beginner.

Hello,

I am new to AutoCad so please keep explanations high level.

To put it simply I am coping some landscaping into a site plan and when I paste it comes it larger than the drawing. The landscaping block i have i've downloaded from the web.

I've tried inserting the block and adjusting the scale but it doesn't seem to work. I've tried specifying a base point and using 0,0 but that doesn't seem to work either. I know you are supposed to be able to check the scale of the drawing I am copying from but am having trouble figuring that out.

I've tried block editor to change the scale, I've tried the scaling tool, i've tried changing the scale before selecting a basepoint etc.

Again I am very new to this, so just hoping for a simple step by step process. This isn't trouble shooting either I just don't know what I'm doing and can't seem to find the info I need in the forum, youtube or my text book.

It is possible that your drawing units are different. Site civil drawings are usually in feet and architects drawings are usually in inches. The block units probably don't match the drawing units so it is coming in too large.

Change the drawing insert units by typing UNITS at the command line and changing it to whatever your drawing units are (feet, inches, millimeters...). When you have changed the units check the insertion scale of the block and set it back to 1.

Let me know if that makes sense. You can also post the drawing so we can look at it to explain better if I missed the point.

What means "doesn't seem to work"? What happens instead?

That can not work. This way you place the block reference at 0,0, but don't change the scale factor.

You should not modify the blockdefinition in the blockeditor (if you don't know what you do).

Scaling the block reference should work. What happens if you do it? How do you do it?

This should work too, if you do it the right way.

Let us see your drawing (dwg, not only a pic), and we can show you a lot of ways to get the wished result.

Hi,

simply ... do the follow :

insert that big landscaping block ( as you said ) to your drawing .
use SCALE command to make it small tell it meet your need .

Scale >> Select objects >> Specify base point >> Specify scale factor

Command: SC SCALE
Select objects: Specify opposite corner: 2 found

Select objects:
Specify base point:
Specify scale factor or [Copy/Reference]: .5

Now ... when it's reached to a proper size use EXPLODE command to explode it and make sure that you explode it well ( we have to do because when you want to insert it again it will come in a proper small size and as you wish ) .
after exploding ... use BLOCK command to convert all previous exploded block to a new block with a new name .
use INSERT command to call back the new block and i suppose that it will work fine .
