Hi again everyone....

I need to update everyone on this layer issue. I incorrectly said it was called AAPLUMBING which is not right as it's actually called "A-PLUM-FIXTURE".

Thx

OttoKadd

Hi Guys-N-Gals....

I have a pesky little problem with an older version of ACAD2000 which has and continues to run flawlessly BTW. Here is the issue....a client sent me a drawing file 5 years ago of a preliminary floor plan that he wanted finished up into a working drawing. Ever since I opened that file and completed his plan for him, every drawing I've created since then now has a pesky layer in it called AAPlumbing which is driving me nuts. I don't know what has happened to my default setup since opening that particular file but can't seem to locate the location where it resides.

I can't delete this layer, it can't be purged or at least I can't figure out how. My usual blank drawing sheet with my title blocks etc has this layer now imbedded in it and I really need to get rid of this thing. Any ideas or direction would be greatly appreciated....

Thx

Otto Kadd

if you open a new blank .dwg by Ctrl+N shortcut , is there any existing for AAPlumbing layer ? also would you please tell us about your CAD ver. ? upload a CAD .dwg sample that contain that layer for testing please ? also you have to know that you can not purge any used layer .

CAD-STANDARDS came later (with 2004).

@Anonymous

Check Imad way (WBlock - entire drawing and Purge in new File, Wblock - object selection or copy & paste to an new file)

If that isn't working you can use LAYMRG from ExpressTools, did you installed ExpressTools

or do you need it?

@Anonymous wrote:

I can't delete this layer, it can't be purged or at least I can't figure out how.

If you can post your template file, someone here will find out what is using it.

It can't be purged because it is being used by something. Do you have the LAYDEL command? It will delete the layer anything on it. So, if you are sure that you don't need whatever is using that layer, LAYDEL will get rid of it for you.

Alternatively, if you are unsure and do not want to risk deleting something you need, LAYMRG will get rid of the offending layer and put anything on that layer on another layer of your choosing.

These commands may not be available in such on old version but I'd be willing to bet that even the free AutoCAD alternatives do. (Hint)

I agree, try LAYDEL.

Very aggressive way to remove a layer. Anything on that layer will also be deleted.

Not many people have them and I don't think LAYDEL came out at that time.

I've had this issue with not being able to delete a layer and the LAYDEL command was the solution for me. But, I do not know if that command existed in the 2000 version or not. There must be something embedded somewhere in the drawing that you aren't seeing to keep it from purging/deleting the layer. X-REF, block, etc.

Hey people..
Like Rob wrote above, if you don't know where the Layer is "used", you should use laymrg and not laydel.

As i wrote above, both commands should incl. In Expresstool v9.(2000-2002 i think)
And if you need them, no problem.

Thank you all for all the tips, hints, suggestions etc and sorry for the delayed response. I am attaching a stripped down wblocked title sheet which has this stupid layer in it that won't purge. If anyone would like to take a crack at trying to figure out WHY this phantom layer cannot be removed, it would be greatly appreciated. If it's possible to determine the exact reason why it's welded to my drawings and the process of getting rid of it forever would be most helpful because I quite often pull parts from previous jobs to import into new designs and this layer just comes along for the ride.

I know I can re-create this title sheet from scratch and not have this layer present but the second I try to bring in a block from a previous project, pow.....there it is again. I need to figure out a method of purging this layer from my life and all my designs/blocks/details/etc.etc.etc…….

Thank you all again very much for your consideration and efforts.....

Cheers

Otto Kadd

Thank you Imad...I can create a new drawing with CTRL N and the layer does not get generated. That is of course, an immediate solution to creating a new drawing however, I have literally 10's of thousands of blocks, drawings, details that I can not go back and recreate as I don't have enough time left in my life to do that. I have a specific Title Sheet (the one I just uploaded) that I use all the time and it's pretty clean but that layer is there. There is no entities on that layer that I can find so I can't see why it won't purge.

I am using ACAD2000 on my field office computer and ACAD2006 on my main office computer. The layer is not causing any serious problems at all....it's just a nuisance when I share my files with anyone as the question keeps coming back as to what is that layer for? Also, I do a lot of DXF importing into other apps and that layer tags along in the import as well which can be a little bothersome to get rid of in the other apps as well.

I am the type of person that needs to know why because it drives my nuts when I can't figure out how this things is so sticky that is now part of every drawing or block I've created over the last 5 years. I want to eradicate this thing once and for all.

I hope I've answered your questions....

Cheers

Otto

Hi there....nope....I don't have LAYMGR or LAYDEL in either version I'm running and I didn't load the ExpressTools either. I'm running ACAD2006 but I don't see CAD-Standards anywhere either.....

What I'm really interested in determining is what is causing this layer to be attached to my drawings. I'm sure there are lots of possible ways of nuking this thing but I need to figure out what is causing this issue so that I can run a series of steps when I reuse a block in a new drawing to neutralize this layer and eliminate it.

Cheers

OttoKadd

Hi,

As you can see from below image , that layer come from the only dimension style (Arch-1 ) that exist in your drawing and specifically from custom VW-SLASH arrowhead that your only dimension style used and this is explain why Purge command didn't fix the issue because it's used layer . for that and to fix your issue please Insert in any dimension line from any another drawing that follow a new dimension style ( NOT Arch-1 ) then set current that new dimension style then Purge drawing to find that A-PLUM-FIXTURE layer deleted . see attached CAD .dwg file .

Also when i open your drawing in AutoCAD 2017 a message appear telling me that it's recommended to delete layer filters .

Regards,

Why you didn't load ExpressTools? That really stupid (Sorry, i don't know the right word, stupid is near too, but to hard 😉 )

In 2000+2006 it is on your data media, it is easy to do a late install, do it.

CAD-Standards (in your 2006), The command is STANDARDS and LAYTRANS - check your help [F1]

Menu TOOLS, third item -> [Standard CAD]

unused waste = 2644 Layerfilter

Layer A-PLUM-FIXTURE is use in both arrow-blocks.

Easy solution: You have to redefine both blocks (in every drawing where Designcenter find that Layer 😉 , command RefEdit is your friend.

Redefine by an menumacro (INSERT command) or

DesignCenter (Re-define from context menu of a block item) or

LAYMRG from Expresstools (prefer way if you never wanted to use this layer).

Note: Is it allowed for you to redefine that blocks? They are defined by client or not?

Thank You so much IMAD....this has cured a 5 year old problem. I'll just have to suffer through correcting this on every single block I insert or drawing I edit but at least I know why the issue persists and how to fix it.

Thanks again....I really appreciate it....

OttoKadd

Hi CADffm...thanks for your input. I didn't load any additional tools for a very specific reason at the time and now I probably will however, I think IMAD's solution seems to work well for me at this point in that I will simply bring up the dimension style manager and switch to the "Standard" style and then purge. It works like a dream and eliminates the problematic layer.... Not sure why I didn't see that a long time ago but in any event it's gone from my life now.

Cheers and thank you for your input and solutions.....

OK
