topic what is the dim variable to change this length? in AutoCAD Forum

This dimension is a little short. I'm looking for the dimension variable that would extend it a bit. Can someone help me out? Thanks....see the image

@MKH-VB wrote:

Which length are you talking about? Obviously some suggestions are about how far the extension line goes past the tip of the arrow, and some about how far the text is from the tail of the arrow. Do you mean you want the tail of the arrow longer? For that, I think you will need to use a custom arrowhead. It puts in an arrow, and an additional tail of the same length as the arrow size. If you define a Block that is one drawing unit long, with an arrowhead less than 1 drawing unit long, assign it to your Dimension Style, and give the Dimension Style a larger arrow size [the inverse of the length of the arrow Block], that will make a larger added tail, and you should get an arrow that looks the same size but has a longer tail:

In theory, your dimension '1' should go in between the extension lines. The exception to between the dimension lines is to place the text outside, or next to the extension line when the text height is too tall (refer to the Fit Tab in Dim Styles Dialog Bos). If you decrease your text height then your dimension '1' will fit and subsequently be place in between just like the your dimension '10.'

In the event you do not want to decrease the text height and you want the dim to be placed on the side of the extension then you'll have a 'gap' between the DIM and the arrow tail. The gap is manipulated by 'text offset' in Dimension Styles settings. The smaller the offset, then the smaller the gap, and vice versa..

If you simply want to extend the arrow tail, you'll need to click on the dimension, then grab the grip and drag it either left or right. Depending on the direction, dragging will invariably stretch or shorten the arrow tail. The stretching or shortening does not have a variable.
