When you scale your drawing on the layout tab, you sometimes end up with annotations (dimensions) being to big.

Is it possible to make the dimension size fit in size for the layout sheet?

Hi,

Let’s assume that we have a floor plan with maximum exterior dimensions of 525 inches and 336 inches. Now in order to plot this drawing on a normal A3 size sheet of paper which is 420 X 297 mm we need to decrease the overall scale of drawing to appropriate size.

Let’s select a scale of ¼” = 1’ which in layman’s term can be summed up as 0.25 inches on paper equals 1 feet on actual drawing. Now with this scale, the drawing looks like this on A3 paper.

Several ways to do this - the easiest is to decide which scale will suit your drawing before you start dimensioning (see how your geometry fits in the viewport)
If you have to change scale afterwards, there's two main ways:

1. Use annotative dimensions & text (Annotative-Yes in the properties palette) - if you turn ANNOAUTOSCALE on, it will automatically add scales to your dimensions when you change the viewport scale. This can be usefulif this icon is blue, ANNOAUTOSCALE is on

2. If you prefer to use non-annotative dimensions, you can change the dimscale in the dimensions property and it will re-size the text & arrows for you. (Some people prefer to have a different dimension style for each scale also)

3. You can dimension in paperspace at scale 1:1 but I prefer not to do that as I like to have all my drawing in model space

I've done the following:

- Made my dimension Annotative

- Added scales 1:1, 1:10, 1:50 and 1:100 via OBJECTSCALE

- I've changed my text size from 125 to 12.5 in order

This makes my dimension 12.5mm on my layout and when I switch from 1:1, 1:10, 1:50 and 1:100 it stays at 12.5mm at all time. So that part work, which is great.

BUT...

When I add a dimension on my model, it's now very tiny, because I had to change text height from 125 to 12,5.

So how do I preserve what I've just changed, but at the same time make my dimension larger in the model environment?

If you change the annotative scale in model space to the scale you are dimensioning at, it should display the text at the correct size.

As far as I can see, the text height should be set to the height you want the text to be in paper space and the annotative scale will sort the rest out.

If you've not done already, to make sure your future dimensions come in correctly, it's best to set up a dimension style with your text heights and other preferences in it (ticking the 'Annotative' box on the Fit tab in the style set-up dialog also). Then you won't need to apply overrides (though you will still need to add scales to each dimension if you have the annoautoscale option turned off)

Is that because the correct way of adding dimensions is through an active viewport?

Well, you can do it that way too, I wouldn't say either way was more correct than the other. I tend to just switch tabs rather than working through the viewport because zooming in & out lags when you're working in a locked viewport as autocad switches between pspace and mspace.
