Hi All,

Hoping to find a solution to this rather vexing issue I'm having.

Let me lay out my system first of all:

AutoCAD 2019, updated to latest version.

Windows 10 Enterprise, all up to date.

CPU: Intel Xeon E5-1650, 6 cores @ 3.5GHz

Ram: 64Gb @ 2133MHz

HDD: 256Gb SSD, unknown type

Graphics card: NVidia Quadro M2000

The issues I'm having is that I am unable to zoom in or out with the scroll wheel. I can zoom via the zoom command, but this slows down my work by an order of magnitude. I can pan around the drawing just fine. I have clipped the point cloud quite a lot, I probably only have %20 of it displayed - I'm not sure how the clipping of point clouds behaves though.

The regenall command has no effect, the Audit command has no effect (finds no errors, but I find sometimes this can help speed up a drawing). I have tried reducing the level of detail in the point cloud ribbon, this has no effect what so ever, even if I reduce the detail to minimum, where only a handful of points are shown.

The drawing has some basic 2D poly line geometry in it, and a point cloud. I'm new to point clouds, but this one is about 600Mb worth. Not sure if that is considered large or not.

I'm only trying to view this from top view, in 3D wireframe view though, the point cloud won't show up otherwise.

I'm working locally (not on our work network) off the SSD. Looking in task manager AutoCAD is using 6 - 900Mb of RAM and a tiny amount of cpu, the graphics does spike as I pan around, but the panning is done smoothly.

I have been working in this drawing for several hours already, zooming with the scroll wheel with no lag or difficulty, all of a sudden it has just broken.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Currently this error has essentially rendered it impossible to complete the task I need to complete.

Apologies, but I cannot post the file, proprietary information and all, not to mention 600Mb+

Regards,

Is your MBUTTONPAN variable set to zero? That would stop it panning, don't think it would stop the zoom though.

Thanks for the replies,

My responses are as follows:

Yes, only this drawing file has the issue. This is the only one with a point cloud in it. I have many other complex drawings with hundreds of thousands of objects. I can usually zoom without ever having to regen.

MBUTTONPAN = 1

I cannot zoom in the drawing regardless of the position of the cursor.

Hi Alfred,

I have made a new drawing file and imported the point cloud. I cannot replicate my previous error in it. I have even pasted in all the geometry from the previous file. Given the previous file had very little geometry in it and was purged and audited, I feel that this error is going to occur in the new file, just a matter of time.

I do not use any 3rd party apps or plugins to view or manage the point cloud. It has been supplied to me as an RCP/RCS file combination. I import the RCP file directly into AutoCAD via the point cloud ribbon

Hi,

thx for your detailed feedback!

>> I feel that this error is going to occur in the

>> new file, just a matter of time

Let's see, I would proceed with the new file, save often and also with new filenames (I have 3 digits on the end of the filename and every hour or so the file gets a new filename/new number at the end). That gives later the chance to compare releases of your project when an issue started to happen ... and so hopefully isolate the problem.

Hi Alfred,

Yes, the error is unchanged after a restart of the workstation.

Unfortunately I cannot upload the data. Not only is it proprietary, the industry I work in has recently been the target of industrial espionage - not my work place fortunately - so management is particularly wary at the moment.

I can explain what I am doing though.

I have had the point cloud data generated to assist in making some cut files. We need some material cut to fit in existing spaces. The spaces have large, multiple radius curves and have proven impractical to measure accurately by hand, hence the survey data.

I am essentially overlaying the polylines from our original drawings over the survey data and adjusting them to suit the as built arrangement. I've broken the task up in to sections, so I have about 30 or 40 2D polylines to line up with the survey data. So I'm zooming in and out frequently, changing view frequently and panning constantly, but only drawing in 2D, not snapping to any of the points in the point cloud.

The zooming, view changes and panning is taking place with the same smoothness and speed as I experience normally. It is almost totally smooth and never requires a regen. I can zoom in until my view size is less than 10mm across and out until it is over 100,000mm across without any lag or regenning required (note that it does not become laggy or troublesome beyond these ranges, just that this range fully encompasses the working area I require).

Regards,

Hi,

I'm sorry to not have any more ideas about this behavior which can be done without testing this on other systems.

Maybe you create an Autodesk support case so they can look via remote software to your system/your file content to find the source of this issue.

Maybe others here have some more ideas, of course, ... 😉

Thanks for your help Alfred, much appreciated.

While I haven't found a 'solution' to this issue. I have been able to just create a new drawing, import the point cloud and then paste in all of my previous geometry to 'side step' the issue. While not ideal, this has allowed me to progress largely unhindered.

Curiously the drawing files that lock up on the zoom function remain locked up even after deleting all geometry and purging all items. The files will still not allow for zooming even with no objects left in them what so ever. The files Audit clean too.

Regards,

Sam.

I was going to suggest you creating a new drawing but wanted to see others opinions.

Just a side note (may be off topic), I have seen people explode blocks, hatches, etc. on their drawings.

IMO it is not recommended. It may result a large file size and may cause performance issue.

Hope this help others.
