Files not opening as read only for colleagues

Hi There,

I have an issue here, when a file is open via the network drive other users do not get notified the file is open already so they do their work - this means data is getting lost, and users are complaining of time lost.

All the files are stored on a network drive

This has only started occurring now - and has not been a problem before

Can someone check and advise please

What are the details regarding the location where the files are stored? The operating system controls file locking, so it's not an AutoCAD issue. But if you have file appliances such as Panzura or Nasuni, or if you use a file syncing software such as Peer, then there are other items in the equation that have to be examined.

Also, do any of the users get an error after a save that says something like: “Unable to save to drawing K:\mypath\mydrawing.dwg - Drawing saved to SAV98C2.tmp” (You may have to examine the command line history after trying to save)

The thing is the guys have all other file types stored on the same drive for example word, excel and so on but when any file other than Autocad is opened they do get the " the file is locked for editing by another user " do you want to open a read only,

So seems its only not happening for Autocad files

Forgive me, but your reply "same drive" did not answer the specific questions posed to you in the earlier reply, try again or ask if you did not understand what was asked.

Hi There

The details supplied to me from the IT team are below

OS name: Microsoft windows server 2016 standard
System name: VMware 7.1
System type: X64 based PC
System name: SRV-FS

All the Autocad files are stored on a folder on the above drive. The users get no errors when saving the file.

How are the network resources on which the files are located? What are the rights for different user groups for these resources?

Are these virtual servers and/or are you running AutoCAD on virtual machines?
Find out if there are any file syncing apps running (e.g.: Peer), or NAS devices being used.

Nothing has changed, most virtual and cloud services do not offer that ability yet and Autodesk does not address that shortcoming. Which are you all using?

We're using a Windows Server, File Share with a Mapped Drive.

No virtual or cloud services, no VPN, no NAS.

I saw another post mention their time clock server was causing a similar issue.. I am going to test if this has something to do with it.

Are you using VMWARE like they are?

Did you and your IT person work through the link I shared yet?

AutoCAD has not "locked" files in decades now, that's an OS/File Server functionality, not much else. This forum is not ideal for IT type fixes.

You need a new outside IT consultant with AutoCAD setup knowledge perhaps?

What other seemingly odd system level issues are you all facing exactly?

If you'd read my entire post on the other thread, then you'd know I am talking about this same issue.

4 other people over there also have this same file locking issue.

You are assuming it was vmware causing @Anonymous's issue.

That's what I'm saying too, perhaps it got lost somwhere: you do indeed have file locking problem, but that is OS based, there is nothing in AutoCAD that will turn it off/on at all anymore, that went away a few decades ago now.
