It's been a bit frustrating.

I built a free web-based tool to replace the removal of the FBX export functionality - feel free to give it a try.

https://devfme.abley.com/fmeserver/apps/DWGtoFBX

FBXIMPORT/EXPORT for Autocad 2020

I would like to see a 2020 version of this fix for Autocad based products. I currently use FBXIMPORT to bring 3d Revit models exported to FBX into Civil 3D.

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/FBXIMPORT-and-FBXEXPORT-removed-from-AutoCAD-2019.html

Hi,

for AutoCAD 2019 there existed a plugin, I hope strongly that this will be updated for 2020!

This is one thread about that >>>click<<<

And here is the plugin for 2019 >>>click<<< (but I have not got it working with 2020, loading the ARX fails)

This is really not a good solution. We use fbx import all the time to bring in preliminary site models and vendor models into Autocad for use with plant 3d. Taking the imx from infraworks into Civil 3d just makes things so much more difficult to work with.

Below is a link to a Navisworks app that allows you to import objects directly from Navisworks to AutoCAD in real time. It makes referencing objects a Federated model relatively easy.

While it is currently not optimized for large exports (either a lot of objects, or very complicated object geometry), it will work. There are plans to add the ability to export a file out of Navisworks to disc, then import into AutoCAD in a future release which should hopefully make it more efficient for very large imports.

Navis To Acad

Alfred,

I know I answered this in your personal post but I will go ahead and answer it here as well...

To give you some perspective on why it has replace FBX import/export for me, I am a tradesperson who does BIM VDC work fulltime for a contractor. I work primarily out of Navisworks (for coordination with other trades) and AutoCAD. We would regularly use FBX export from Navisworks in order scavenging design model valves/components/equipment/vessels/steel or any other model content that we were not provided in DWG form and import them into AutoCAD. I am not sure of your use of FBX other than to import to Civil 3D from infraworks, but when FBX import capabilities were removed it disrupted our workflow for accessing this geometry from Navisworks to AutoCAD. Could we manage to bring them in by converting the FBX to DWG with 3DS max? Sure, but it was not very streamline and if one did not have the AEC license bundle they would have to purchase additional software.

I hope that I did not offend anyone by posting this here, I just it might help some folks. Will Navis to Acad be beneficial in your personal workflow? Maybe. Could it benefit other folks who are using Navisworks along side AutoCAD who stumble upon this thread? I would bet on it.

I have had to resort to doing this. I have had mixed results with this. Normally when I use FBX it is to go to 3ds Max. The only time I do this to AutoCAD is to take models done in a 3rd party software like Tekla over to AutoCAD. I have had some occasions where the export from Navisworks will not open in AutoCAD.

I would like to see the FBX-Import and Export feature to come back to autocad2020 since the dwg-export from autocad to 3dsmax is buggy (it may be an error on my side).

As i have posted in this thread: https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/3ds-max-forum/importing-dwgs-from-autocad2020-to-3dsmax/td-p/9207340

the meshes are oddly subdivided and the uv's are messed up completly.

I tried different options when exporting (legacy, linking, sorting, etc...) but no luck yet.

Ok, i have made a request, but i doubt that they will bring back fbx. I guess this is a strategical move from autodesk. i can't figure out what they want to achieve with this strategy except annoying the customers.

I couldn't care less if the dwg-export would work as it should, but that is not the case or i am doing it wrong.

So if someone could show me how to get a clean mesh with a texture from Autocad to 3dsmax, that'll be great.

That is my problem and i would like to get it solved now. I can't wait and hope for Autodesk to bring back fbx sometime in the future, i need a solution.

I'm really thankful for future hints/workarounds/comments

Keep them coming

Cheers

Stefan

As i recall, Autodesk released it just for a short time and then deleted the fbx-plugin again. Luckily, users who got it could share the plugin with others.

But as i stated before, i don't have time for asking colleagues to make requests to autodesk and hope for the fbx-plugin.

All i want is someone to help me get the dwg-import from autocad to 3dsmax right.

I have found a solution for my specific problem with using plex in autocad and getting that terrain into max.

I posted it here:

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/3ds-max-forum/importing-dwgs-from-autocad2020-to-3dsmax/m-p/9209991/highlight/false#M182053

Cheers

The year is now 2020.... is there a solution to this problem?

...importing plain .imx data from Infraworks is insufficient and doesn't capture the likes of custom shapes and solids... therefore I am trying this ".fbx" alternative.... if only 2020 would actually have the feature to import said files.

Forgive me, but its already been state that "Autodesk removed the feature" so there is never going to be a fix from Autodesk for plain AutoCAD as discussed above https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/autocad-forum/fbximport-export-for-autocad-2020/m-p/8760167#M977903

You can tell Autodesk about your feelings here, if you and a 100000 other users do it there is a chance it might come back https://www.autodesk.com/company/contact-us/product-feedback

Thanks pendean, I used the link.

We pay for the suite, and I don't have the time or inclination to learn another software suite just to get a command back that used to work. It's the same with ReCap and classifications in lidar, you used to be able to select only the classifications you wanted in Civil 3D and it would create the surface from it. Now they expect you to do that with another suite in the software. So now we get the GIS department to generate our EG surfaces for us.

If they keep this up, it may be worth only purchasing the individual software packages rather than the suite.

edit: it's almost like going back to the 90's where we needed to have 3rd party developers to provide the solutions we needed, but this time Autodesk did have them before and chose to remove them.

I totally agree this is a feature that needs to return in some fashion. There are many times we get models in from vendors that the only file format we could get to work successfully was an .fbx. I don't know why the feature was removed from 2020, but we really need it back in 2021 and beyond.
