That is great to know and is an effective way for me to get around, thanks.

However at this point i still think the zoom out could be done a lot better.

The zooming out issue when using the mouse scroll wheel that i have pointed out seems independent of where the 0,0,0 is, and whilst i realise there are other zoom options, the point i am making is specifically about the zooming out issue when using the mouse scroll wheel.

The mouse scroll wheel is a quick and easy way to zoom in and out of areas of a drawing. However, when zooming out the drawing shifts in the opposite direction to what i think it should.

If you use the scrolling mouse wheel to zoom:

The point where the cursor is located always is the "fix point" and doesn't move while zooming. All other will move to this point (if zooming out) or move from this point away (if you zoom in). Knowing this, you can locate your cursor at an suitable position and then scroll the mouse whhel.

I don't yet understand your problem (?).

Hi,

AutoCAD uses the mouse position as center for zooming, independent from zooming out or in.

And at least, this is common to all software products using a mouse-wheel. So everyone using the mouse-wheel is used to that way.

I also thought about which other mouse position (not the center of zooming) could help to give the user an orientation about how zoom will behave ... I see the center the only point that makes sense.

Here a sample using a completely different software, as you can see, the mouse position is the center for zooming ...

When i zoom in with the scroll wheel it shifts the area i have the pointer on towards the centre of the screen, which is good, whereas when i zoom out it does the opposite, the area that i have the pointer on gets further and further from the centre of the screen.

No, not exactly, not to the "center of the screen". All geometry comes more close to the mouse position.

From watching your video it seems to me that you need be using PAN as well as ZOOM to navigate around your drawing.

Try holding down the scroll wheel button while you move the mouse and see if that helps you to get where you want to go.

I had another look and yes i can see that the point on the drawing that the pointer is on stays in the same position, however the effect of this when zooming in is that the undesired parts of the drawing shift off the screen, and you get the area of the drawing that you want.

When zooming out the opposite of what you want happens, the area of the drawing that you have the pointer on does not become the focus of the screen, instead the desired area shifts towards the edge of the screen.

In summary, the point that the pointer is pointing at stays in the same location on the screen, but the area around the pointer effectively shifts on the screen, for better when zooming in, and for worse when zooming out.

Keeping the point under the pointer in the same location at all times makes sense when you have the whole image in view, zoom in, and then zoom out, without moving the pointer at any time.

At any other time, where you say zoom in and then move the pointer, or pan, or want to refocus while zooming out, its terrible.

If my suggestion were enacted, it would mean that in the example you give, as you zoom out the point under the pointer would shift in some measure towards the middle of the screen, which would overall adjust the bearing towards the right somewhat. Not a big problem but perhaps not what is most desired in that particular instance.
