Overlays included when drawing is inserted into another drawing? Seriously?

Why in the world would I want overlayed xref's to be included in a drawing I'm inserting into another drawing?! That just counters the point of it being an overlay. If it was an attachment then I'd understand.

The people responsible for this have got to be the dumbest smart people ever. I did a search before asking this and apparently this started happening back in 2009 and it has still not been addressed by anyone from Autodesk.

I can't supply you the drawing I'm actually working on but I'll create one and post here. I have access to Civil 3D suites from 2010 all the way up to 2019 which I just tested and created the drawings that are attached here with.

Civil 3D as autocad same issue BUT AutoCAD by itself it apparently does what it should until you zoom extents at which point the overlay is there but not in the same place it is when using Civil 3D.

Product and version please? Curious how you seem to have it working when it doesn't work in any version for me from 2010 to 2019. I've tried it in Civil 3D packages and basic AutoCAD all from base installs no customization of any kind.

2020 AutoCAD MEP and I'm sure it will work on vanilla 2020. I don't have any older versions installed to test but I've never seen an overlayed XREF carry forward in the 17 years that I've been using XREFs.

I'm glad it doesn't happen to you but it does happen. There's posts from as far back as 2008/2009 regarding this issue as I've been searching for an answer. Also telling me you're sure it works in vanilla 2020 when you've not tested it is reassuring, thanks.

I've been using and testing it over many versions for many years. Why would I expect anything different? That would be insane.

I've never used Civil 3D but I do know that it is a different beast. Maybe that is where you should be focusing.

Rob nothing personal but you come across very arrogant. I've been using AutoCAD much longer than you and my experience has been that each version creates new tools that help and new bugs that create headaches for users. I would hope that something that worked in older versions would continue to work as intended but again my experience apparently differs from yours. It's not insane, it's just my experience.

Lastly I truly apologize for using the word 'seriously' in my title as it has apparently hit a nerve with you which you can't let go of.

Nothing personal? Your kidding right or don't you know the meaning of that statement?

You set the tone in your first post. Talk about arrogance. You didn't even ask if anyone else was experiencing this errant behavior. You just assumed it was a problem with the program. Trust me, if it were a widespread issue, we'd be hearing a lot more about it. What you are describing is wrong by definition. I've never seen it and cannot replicate it on my end. Accept it or not but unless it is something to do with Civil 3D, you need to consider strong arm alternatives.

Hey Rob just wanted to verify something going over our discussion.. You do understand I'm not talking about xrefing the mentioned drawing into another drawing but inserting it like you would a block right? I just wanted to clarify because my experience would then be the same as yours wherein if I xref a drawing with overlays into another drawing the overlays do not carry forward.

No, I did not understand that. In my world, putting XREF's into blocks is not recommended and I would expect the unexpected to happen. If I had a need to insert a drawing as a block that had XREFs, I would delete the XREFs before attempting.

Does the XREF in the inserted file show in the XREF manager in the target file?

It does show as an xref. The reason this started was because when we attempted to bind the drawing into another drawing Civil 3D would hang. We audited and purged both drawings but still it would hang when we attempted to bind the drawing. So I decided to just insert the drawing. I have since reconciled the xrefs out of the new drawing I just found it strange and frustrating that overlays carried over like that when they didn't use to.

Things change. You've been around long enough to know that Autodesk is not always in control. They have to adapt to new operating systems. They also have make changes to existing features/functions as new ones are added, etc. etc. etc.

When you use features in a way that they were not intended to be used, eventually something unexpected is going to happen.
