A perpendicular snap is perfectly fine, IF it has to do with the current object I am drawing.

Say, if I'm in the middle of drawing a line and a common snap point for lines would be perpendicular to another object, GREAT.

BUT, now say I draw a circle at one point, finish the command, then invoke a new circle command, and try to draw a circle somewhere else. When I do that, and the new circle keeps trying to snap to a point perpendicular from the center of the FIRST circle, this is NOT OK!

How do I keep my perpendicular snap turned on, but keep it from snapping to ridiculous perpendicular points from irrelevant previous commands?

I don't remember asking if it was good for somebody else. I know I can turn osnap on and off.

The question is, how do I keep osnap ON, and keep it associating with only the current command?

When I start a NEW command, it's not because I want PAST commands to have anything to do with it.

The program doesn't wok like that: you either get in the habit of tapping F3 to toggle off/on your running osnaps, reduce your Aperture size to really small, or you rewrite every command as a LISP and use them instead.

How would you like to proceed?

I've tried to duplicate your problem in 2020. The only time I get a perpendicular osnap is when I'm actually selecting on the circle radius. This makes me think that the previous comments regarding the Aperture setting may be relevant.

@AllenJessup wrote:

I've tried to duplicate your problem in 2020. The only time I get a perpendicular osnap is when I'm actually selecting on the circle radius. ....

I don't think it's ridiculous that it works this way, and I can see why some would prefer that it not do so, but it does operate as they describe for me, in Acad2019 where I am at the moment.

In the image, I have blips turned on, so you can see the basis of the Circle there; the top line of command history showing is where I picked to specify the radius [the rightward blip]. Then I recalled the command with ENTER, and as you can see from the command line, it's asking for a center point, and with Osnap on with PERpendicular one of the running modes, if I were to pick where the crosshairs are, it would indeed use the point PERpendicular to the Line from the previous Circle's center [not from the last picked point on the Circle perimeter], where the green Osnap PER icon is. I also have MIDpoint mode running, so if I move the cursor a little farther to the right, the Osnap moves to going for the MIDpoint of the Line.

HOWEVER, I note that while it does this for the center of a Circle, it does not do it for the start point of a Line, and I can see there being a legitimate complaint about that difference, whichever side of the fence one sits on. [I haven't tried other commands to see in which this happens.]

I don't think the size of the Osnap Aperture box [visible in the image] would make any difference -- if something Osnappable crosses it, regardless of the box's size, it will Snap to it [or to the nearest of multiple choices].

Yes, the aperture size didn't help. The points I need to snap to are very close, and they seem to be overridden even when I zoom in. Thanks for the effort qnologi.

Thanks Kent,

I now CAN duplicate it in 2020 and even know what's happening. But not how to solve it.

For some reason, in only this case, the perpendicular command is taking the value in the LASTANGLE variable and using it as the angle from the from the center of the Circle (most likely) stored in the LASTPOINT variable and using those values to create the perpendicular point.

I don't see why this should be the exception to every other case. I would consider it a BUG. But Autodesk might consider it to be working As Expected.

As stated before, there are ways to control your OSnaps so that you can use the desired one. In addition to the two that I mentioned before, you can use the tab key to cycle through your running OSnaps.

Thank you Allen.

Here is a screen shot of how it is working for me.

The first shot shows a circle I've drawn which automatically used the "intersection" snap point.

And below it is the "perpendicular" point it's selecting for the new circle under it.

The vertical line is not straight up and down. The bottom end of the line is further to the left.

The next image to the right shows zoomed far in, with the aperture size reduced, and cross hair directly over the intersection.

It still wants to select the perpendicular point to the right.
