It wasn't our call... The machine is in an auxiliary office of our partner company, and they want our blocks and custom ribbon tabs but also to be able to swap back to their original set up. We can't even re-install, they do not give us permission: would rather it just not work than to change it. Hence, strange and frustratingly limited. Might be no answer, but figured we could at least try...

Hello!

We are having an issue with cursor snap.

When placing an object, we have a .lsp that grabs existing system variables commonly set to user preferences, sets them to the desired values for placing said blocks, and then returning those values to their existing user preferred values after the block is placed. This may or may not be relevant.

On all our v2022 machines, and on other older versions in the past, this has worked without issue.

PROBLEM: Set up another machine using v2020 AutoCAD, and when placing the blocks it is like there is no snap at all.

Tried adjusting SnapGridLegacy at either 0 or 1.

Tried changing previous snap settings on or off.

Tried re-installing CAD and using no .lsp.

Any hints as to what the issue could be? The curser simply moves about freely and does not snap to grid, either before or when in a command.

Thank you.

If the lisp is changing settings and the setting worked prior, my guess is that it is the reason things are not working.

Have you tried resetting AutoCAD to defaults?

If not, they might be needed (2020.1.6 is the last one I believe).

Sounds like you have an administration problem more than a CAD problem 🙂 It not easy leading up the chain but sometimes you have to let them know that their choice in policy is at odds with quality.

That said, did resetting to default make a difference?

Ya, quite possibly... But no, it did not. However, we are waiting for it to be available to test a possible fix I found in a thread talking about SNAPTYPE=0 or 1, as if it is set to polar instead of grid snap for whatever reason, it will appear as if snap is not working at all, and this appears to replicate the issue on our machines. Hopefully it is as simple as that...

Turns out it was as simple as that! SNAPTYPE was set to 1, we set it to 0 and the issue went away, the blocks placing normally. Who knows why that was changed... but glad it was easy.

It does for me, if I understand their issue correctly. With SNAPGRIDLEGACY = 1 so that positional Snap works even with no command running, then with SNAPTYPE = 1 for Polar, no positional Snapping happens anyway [free-floating cursor], but it does with SNAPTYPE = 0 for Rectangular:

Yes, that's it exactly. We were unfamiliar with polar snap, so didn't realize that's what was happening... We just wanted grid snap and all we knew at first was the it seemed like it wasn't turned on lol.
