I cannot get the shift key to toggle ortho mode. I have turn on and off temp overrides and it still didn't work. I've seen this problem a couple places with no solution. Can this be fixed? Am I missing something?

Judt to make sure you are calling in the right order. You start the line command, pick a start point, hold Shift key down and move cursor, ortho is locked on temporarily, pick the end point, ... Is this what you normally do for the ortho override?

Yes, for example, I keep ortho on. COPY command, Click start point, Move to second point, push shift to toggle ortho off, it doesn't toggle off.

Shift works for toggling my trim/extend command, but not ortho.
Has this ever worked for you, or is this a new PC, or new setup, or a problem in one single file or...?
Your exact AutoCAD version as listed in ABOUT command is...?
Are you sure its ORTHO you want to turn off and not POLAR?
Are you sure you are using the core COPY command and not a 3rd party tool? have to ask, we don't know you or your setup.

Your method works fine here with ORTHO: there is a second delay, its not instant though, that's by design.
F8 toggle off fine inside COPY command as well.

Yes, shift has always temporarily toggled ortho. I'm on a Lenovo Labtop. Version is 47.0.0 Autocad 2021. I'm not using Polar. Yes it is the standard COPY command. F8 will turn Ortho on and off no problem. I'm trying to temporarily toggle. As a temporary fix I went into 'customize user interface > keyboard shortcuts > Temporary override' and changed 'toggle orthogonal mode' to 'shift+x'. That command works, but doesn't when its set to just 'shift'. Because I use toggle ortho every other command, I'd like to make it one key.

Thanks for your help.

Hi yes,

the way I've always used it is that when I want to toggle ortho in a command (for example when copying something or whilst making a polyline or spline) I hold shift until it toggles off/on. I don't just press it, because it never worked that way before either for me. You needed to hold it down to toggle, once released it would go back to normal setting. So I certainly hold it down long enough for any delay to be irrelevant. I've currently changed the short cut to Shift+z but it's just another key to press, first to toggle on and then you have to do Shift+z to toggle off again so it's not that convenient.. But it's better than to move your whole hand across the keyboard to F8.. As someone else mentioned, you can not set the short cut for ortho toggle to be only Shift.

I’ve attached an image of my key board and I’ve tried with the FN locked on or off, it doesn’t make a difference (apart from when using F8)

Hi. The main problem I am seeing with 2020-2022 is that the program wasn't taught to use only 1 of both shift keys. In other words, if you manage to hold both shift keys down you will make temporary ortho toggle go into effect. BUT, lets face it, thats not practical at all. Using 1 shift key + other nearby character will have to do.

I want to ask you something please. How did you edit your command? When I try to type in the edit nothing happens. Basically I want to do what you have done. It is the only solition I was able to pull off with my previous version. Now I have a new program and can't remember how I did it. Can you help please? Thank you
