UCS location

Hi, novice level here. My X Y UCS origin point is not at 0,0 nor is it acutally on the visible grid on the drawing. Very frustrating for what I believe is an easy fix but I can't figure it out.

So what is your question ? Do you want the UCS to return to its 'default' location? If this is what you want, type UCS on command, then choose W, click ENTER.

Hi,
Thank you very much for the quick reply. I have attached a screenshot to show what I am describing below. I am using AutoCAD 2021.
So what I’m dealing with is two-fold. It is when I open any drawing. The X Y UCS is in the bottom area of the drawing window that is off of the grid. I have managed to get the UCS onto the grid by zooming out and reducing the drawing size but that ‘dead’(non-grid) area is always there. The size of that area and where it starts never changes. If I pan into that area, the drawing moves and is always visible but the grid will vanish. As a comparison, whenever I look anything up on the web, that ‘dead’ area doesn’t appear on any screen. I understand the benefit of showing the whole grid in the whole drawing but I’m not sure how to set that up in my program.

Can you please show a screenshot of this situation?

In case (what I assume) it is dwg-file specific ... please upload the dwg-file too.

There are two options for the location of the UCS icon at origin, yes or no. If no is chosen, the icon will be at the lower left corner of the screen. If yes is chosen, it will be at the origin if the origin is on the screen. If the origin is off the screen it will be at the lower left corner.

So, if you look below the grid, there is a large grey area that nothing is covered/extended to as far as the grid but the drawing can be panned into that area and still be visible. It isn't in this image but at times it's almost a third of my drawing sheet.

I personally don't use the grid. Type UCSICON and select the noorigin option and the icon will always be on the lower left corner

Thanks. I'm new to this software so for now I would like to keep it at the origin. If you look in the screenshot, that whole grey area that's below the grid is really the challenge I'm dealing with now. How do I get the grid to display across the complete drawing?

The visible extents of the grid can be controlled by LIMITS.

Have a look at the options for GRID and turn off "Display grid beyond Limits" to extend the visibility of the grid.

Thanks for the reply. If I do that, the grid is no longer visible but the GRID ON icon in the lower bar is toggled ON still. It seems that if I'm in anything other than the 2D Wireframe, the grid is fully visible across the screen but it looks like the Z axis exists as well then.

This is a good example of how much of the grid is missing. The UCS is placed at 0,0.

You want to see the grid beyond the limits, so turn that option on.

It is on and the result is what you see in the image. If I toggle it off in the grid settings, the grid disappears altogether. The GRID in the bar below is still toggled ON though. Because I want to use the grid while I'm drawing, I basically can only use the portion of the screen that has the grid visible for drawing.

What is LIMITS variable set to? "on" isn't enough, works fine in R2021, LT2021 and ACA2021 here if LIMITS is set to reach that UCSICON location.

Thanks for the reply. I'm using AutoCAD 2021. I'm new to this software. When I type LIMITS in the command bar, I only have the option of ON or OFF. If I type it on the screen, I am prompted to set the limits. I think that I am setting these limits but it doesn't look to be doing anything. I feel that this is a basic function and it shouldn't be this difficult to address. I'm trying to move on with introductory training courses for the software but this has become a bit of a roadblock at the moment.

Has the driver for your graphics card been recently updated? Enter GRAPHICSCONFIG on command and turn OFF hardware acceleration.

If this solves your problem then you’ll need to return to the older graphics card driver or download a newer driver b/c the current driver is giving you a problem.

On/OFF is one setting, but the command also asks you to click on points to expand the settings (you can also type them if you know the size you want).

Do yourself a huge favor and look up LIMITS in HELP to understand how it works, its the best way to learn to use this complex program. The only roadblocks are your inability to seek out info where it is readily available

Please read message #10 more carefully.

Start the GRID command and type "L" for Limits. Then select "Yes" to display the grid beyond the assigned limits.

Thank you very much, and to everyone else that took time out to help me. This has addressed the grid issue. Now I will work on the graphics card issue.
