AutoCAD unusable not even able to draw a line

Good day

i am unable to draw on my big drawings anymore autocad just freezes. my pc can definetly handle it i have 24gig of ram and core i9 so its not my pc is there anyway to make autocad handle my complex drawings.

does your AutoCAD start normally ? does commands work fine when start a new and empty drawing ?

if it's work fine ... you need to clean your big and complex drawing ( as you said ) . please try all 4 steps in this link . >> Click <<

What does ABOUT command list as your version?
What is your video card? What is your OS?
What have you tried to far to fix the issue?
What does "big" and "complex drawings" mean to the rest of us who don't know you and have no access to your files?
Where do you store your files?

Windows 10. Graphics card is gtx 1660 by complex I mean I draw 3D
drawings of boats that are 30m in length with full detail. Every handle,
light fixture everything. I use xref to separate my drawings because I
don't like using layers. It was suggested to me to do a purge and
regenerate my drawing. So far the only thing that has made a difference
is if I explode my drawings, but that is not ideal how can I upload a
drawing for you to view

how many MB or GB in size each of these files?
How many XREFs are there exactly?

So that's one file, what about the others (you mention lots of XREFs)?
What about AUDIT command to actually fix possible errors? Must be done to each file (and XREF) as well.

explode what exactly? You talk about lots of XREFs, so I assume you don't mean blocks?

I have done a audit already. The issue doesn't lie in the file that
contains my xrefs but in their individual files.

Did you get any of your content from someone else or a website? If so, WBLOCK any blocks and do an AUDIT, PURGE, -PURGE Regapps on them to get rid of any unnecessary content. Once clean, reinsert and redefine the blocks in your drawing. If any blocks are really old, say from 2000, I would clean them also and see if that helps.

Some of the blocks are old. From about 2002 do I have to clean every
single block? There's allot of them. Or is there a way to select all my
files and clean them all at the same time?

If an audit, purge, -purge regapps doesn't improve your drawing then there is a really high chance you have corrupted data in your drawing and it could be in one of your blocks.

You could try wblocking out portions of your drawing and seeing if there are issues within smaller files.

Have you unloaded all your xrefs and loaded back in individually to see if a specific xref is causing it?

It's definitely not an xref. Because in the file that I import my xrefs
into. That file works fine. But if I do any editing on my large files that
then become xrefs for the main file. Then I have issues. I'll go through
as much as I can to see if maybe there is something corrupted somewhere

So your files work well individually, but not once xrefs are added?

If it was my file, I would detach all the xrefs and reattach them, testing after each addition. It could be two or more of your xrefs are fighting each other.

If you are using xrefs to do the same thing as layers, how many xrefs are you using? I can see 100+ layers for a boat which would really slow down any file if they were xrefs instead.

Layers confuse me. I should probably learn and get used to using it. But I
always forget to change layers and make a huge mess. Should I just switch
to layers ?

Yes, learn to use layers!

An easy way for this drawing would be to open up each XREF and create a new layer. Give the new layer a name that makes sense like "Hardware". Move all the elements in the drawing to the new layer and copy/paste to original coordinates in the base drawing.

I use the command LAYMCUR a lot to change the current layer to match a selected layer (create a keyboard shortcut "CL" for it). If I have something in the drawing on a layer I want to use I select the element and type "CL" to make that layer current and I know I am creating items on the right layer.
