Layer display within 3D Drawing Views

I am using the standard Autocad method of creating 2D views from a 3D model (using the layout tools to create a base view from the Autocad model and projecting the third angle views I require in the layout tab).

This works well but there appears to be no way of displaying/isolating individual layers within these views.

Autocad seems to put all visible entities onto one layer and all hidden entities onto another.

I have modelled the design based upon our companies layering convention and I need to display existing equipment in one colour and proposed equipment on another.

I know I can do this using conventional viewports but I want to maintain the smart dynamic functions of the drawing views.

Ay help will be much apprciated.

If I understood your post correctly, that's never been an AutoCAD ability: if you think otherwise post a DWG file with the problem you see here for others to examine.

I thought so but thought I'd ask the question just in case.

It's a shame that the user is stuck with the Autocad layers and cannot control them to suit company/customer requirements.

I wonder if this will be addressed in future releases?

The premise of the baseview command is great but putting the layer limitation on it was a mistake that makes it useful only in limited situations.

Yes, learn to use layers!

An easy way for this drawing would be to open up each XREF and create a new layer. Give the new layer a name that makes sense like "Hardware". Move all the elements in the drawing to the new layer and copy/paste to original coordinates in the new drawing.

Check out Tool Palettes to help with the layers. You can create a tool that will change to a given layer with one click instead of scrolling through a bunch of layers to find the one to set current. I could put together a quick Screencast of how to do it if you are interested.

Unfortunately, your 2nd reply makes no sense as I am not using XREFs.

Autodesk....is there a plan to address this in future releases?

The 3D view function is great but is almost useless withouth being able to display/plot the layers that the model is create with.
