I guess it depends on how you want to see the bottom for a single mass element. This is a mass element shown in model view with one material that has the bottom and sides turned off. The plan view is turned on for the model and hatched with a different pattern. I'm not sure of the application though. I might be completely missing the intent.

I have attached a drawing. I have a mass element with metal material assigned to just the top surface. I want to apply a second material that is on the bottom surface only,

The reason for this is that we do a lot of churches that the nave, sanctuary and cancel have a ceiling that is projected to the roof. If I could put a material to the bottom of my mass element for the ceiling when I cut my building sections, the material would show in them.

I have included the roof I am trying to do this on.

Mass elements do not support the attachment of more than one material. Using your approach with the roof objects and massing, copy a mass element or group down, define thickness and assign material just as you would for the main roof. Using the same method, you could have a different eave material and rafter ceiling material. I've attached a dwg with this applied.

The roof material assignment will also work with a roof object before adding it to the group.

I should mention that although I prefer the roof object and use a similar method, more complex roof "sections" can be made using roof slabs that have multiple components each having it's own material as well the ability to apply fascia and eave profiles.

Ok I accept this a solution to accomplish what I need. I have attached another of the same drawing where I converted to a roof slab. But a big proportion of the roof is erased when I convert. Can you tell me how to peruse all the roof during the convert.

in the attached I have a section cut that shows what I am trying to accomplish, it shows the clg's on the cut.

The process for using the roof slabs would be different than using the model explorer with roof objects. Although you have the option to convert your mass element to a roof slab, you would convert each roof object into multiple roof slabs. Once you have the roof slabs, use the trim and hole functions as needed. Looking at your post from another thread, Rather than making a complex roof, keep each roof area simple. Once you have your slabs in place, then either edit the slabs by trimming etc or use mass elements with an interference condition depending on your preferred editing.
