Bones and Ligaments (or... Revit Reference Planes and Parameters) with Donnia Tabor-Hanson

Component, or loadable, families in Revit need to start with a good structure. Let’s consider the Reference Planes as the Bones and the Parameters as the Ligaments of a Revit family. Delving into the properties of a Reference Plane and how they can help control a family will open your eyes to their strength. Parameters be they Shared or Family parameters form the ligaments for these bones. The power of that Shared parameter file and rules of editing it will enlighten you as to its use.

Hello Donnia,

Thank you very much for the webinar. It was gratifying to see how tidy your families are.

Unfortunately, I had to leave a bit early and I don't know if the chat question about the reference level and the overlapping reference plane was answered.

The question was if there is any difference in locking geometry to the reference level vs the bottom reference plane that is in the same place. Sorry if this question was explained and I missed it.

I did answer that, you can go back and look at the video if you wish to see what all you might have missed.

As for the reference planes vs the level, I stick with Reference planes. Why would I change just for that one level?

Yes!, and putting them in the correct orientation and adjusting the length has helped a lot in having tidier families. Thanks!

That is great! Not only will other be happier but you will to when you have to reopen a family and fix something. It really gives you a new look at how families are being built by others and now yourself.
