When should a family be a catalog family? How to you get a catalog out of a family? What files are needed to create a catalog? What clean up needs to be done prior to putting any family into a library? How do you test your family to see if it will work in your project.

There are a lot of cylindrical containers that came to mind. I just did two families real quick. One is an extrusion that makes a plain cylinder. Parameters are all instance. The other has all instance parameters but it has been created using a revolve. It also adds a "top" and "bottom" to the cylinder.

Dissect those and see if that helps you with your container problem.

Now, about a question that came in the chat yesterday that I did not get.

Emily Larsen: Can you set the named 3D view to an orientation that isn't home? Will the thumbnail orient to whatever the locked view shows?

I would definitely use a 3D view to set a preview. The cube can help with orientation. As you can see here, when you do a file save you can pick your view. I would not pick a view that had reference planes or dimensions all over it. That would not look clean. It is when you do a "SaveAs" then select "Options..." that you get a way to set your Thumbnail Preview to any named view.

What is your favorite formula used for? Turning things one or off as needed? Setting arrays? Selecting sizes? Preventing null values on extrusions? Adding or removing parts? How many “if” statements can you really put in a formula? Lots of formulas to play with in this session.

Someone suggested that there be a topic on Dynamo for Beginners. I will be the first to tell you that I am a novice myself. What I think you can try is based on how I learned LISP a long time ago. Find an example and build it yourself. I had some great starters that I use. I add our company parameters and then I also preset some parameters with some.

Anyone looking for Dynamo for Beginners should check out the series of webinars presented by Jacob Small (Autodesk Support, and Dynamo Genius), Sol Amour (Dynamo Product Manager) and occasional guest presenters. These started last September, under the old Architecture Community Virtual Meetup format, and have continued on in the current Community Conversation format. Recordings for the series can be conveniently found in one place, the Dynamo Office Hours YouTube playlist.

Start with the 01 - Dynamo Data Types video. They really do start from the very beginning.

I will add that the series will also be of interest to intermediate Dynamo users as well, particularly anyone who, like me, is mostly self-taught (with help from the forum when I swam out too far). I learned something new in every webinar, and found them helpful in filling in the gaps of what I already knew as well as reminding me of things I had already forgotten. Not to mention explaining why things I had blindly copied from other examples actually work.
