When our company needs CAD neutral data files, we always go .step or .iges (where .iges sometimes produce better exports, from Catia for example).

I've never seen re-imported such files have symmetry problems.

(EDIT: I just had my first extra couple of patches with a .step export from Alias too and they did not appear in .iges, so .iges is the CAD neutral format I would recommend!)

Hello,

Our plm group has asked us to save non-parametric, cad neutral data files for released surfacs. My question, and I feel like i've scoured the net to no avail:

What extension can i export an alias file to, that when I re-import it back to alias, will not have ANY translation error.

I.e. in NX or solidworks, i use .x_t, Catia gets .3dxml. it removes all parametric data, but when re-imported, zero translation error as this is the native kernel.

I'm aware that the kernel for alias is shapemanager, but what extension would I export to? .SAT?

Sorry for the bonehead question, but I don't like my surfaces being subtly modified by translators when they don't have to be. (I've tried: mirroring a surface, then exporting and re-importing, then checking symmetry and finding it isn't symmetric anymore!)
