Hi Steve,

quick question, is the ability to scale "through" the pivot point, over to the other side, of any use for you? Due to conflicting behavior with another customer reported issue, this behavior has not been restored. Is that an issue for you?

Thanks,

Since I updated to 2018.4 it doesn't matter how much I am zoomed in on a cv, curve, hull, surface,.... to slow down the scale, move, rotate,.... It used to be the closer I zoomed the more refined I could use these commands. I use this technique quite a bit. Did something get turned off or a toggle switch get moved to another menu that I need to turn on?

Hi Steve,
I didn't have this effect. I made a parallel test between Alias 2017 and Alias 2018.4 and it's absolute the same.

You have now two possibilities:
1. You have to restet your view. Please click in the Palette-->View--> Reset View. Sometimes Alias is loosing the camera view and you see a differnt view than Alias is calculating. After reset View, the Model jumps in the room and you have to activate a new function like pick.
2. if No.1 is not working use the default userprefs and try again. If this helps, you should update your userprefs.

Please let me know if this helps and also if I can give you a helping hand with the cleaning of your preferences. 🙂

So I have done a couple of things. I started 2018.4 with default UserPrefs (it's like using a different program). I also started 2015 (which I haven't uninstalled because it has been my most stable version yet). I used the same curves/file for both versions, and recorded myself scaling a curve as I zoom up on it. You'll see that the 2018.4 version w/ default UserPrefs jumps a lot as I zoom up. Compared to my 2015 with my UserPrefs which as I zoom up keeps much smoother.

I realize that this isn't the best method for scaling curves, surfaces,.... However, when I am doing conceptual modeling it is just much quicker to get very close this way then snap the last cv in to place. I don't lose the character of the curve/surface I created at a different scale.

Have a look at the video I have attached and let me know your thoughts please.

WMV (Windows): https://drive.google.com/open?id=1JI3WMM0JY2Vh39moC3kGLVjNVfBGozFC

MP4 (IOS): https://drive.google.com/open?id=1w32sRnxGDzqmu3dCKxzBHAQFo_xMUIlD

Hi again,

just for the case that the answer are taking longer here is a solution which is in the end the same but more preciser.

you can use the move cv tool and select via space button the non proportional move. then you can adjust the movement very precise without zoom in or out.:

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/community/screencast/e9653d43-d40f-4158-8f2a-b8ee2d15b83a

This may help it is a bit different in your knowing workflow. I use it when it has to be very precise because you have a better control of it.

Hope this helps until I get a feedback

Thanks Nikki,

I will give it a try. Looks like the more appropriate way for class A for sure. Just seems like a lot more picks and typing then just zooming in. For quick concepting at least. That has always been the beauty of Alias. Less menu picks and typing of inputs like most other caid systems require.

Hi Steve,

We did in fact make a change in the scale and non-proportional scale tools. In order to support maintaining the same relative scale between all picked items, both tools now apply the same percentage change in scale to all picked items, rather than the same incremental change. In doing so the previous behaviour of determining scale speed based on the size of picked objects had been disabled. Based on user feedback we will be re-implement this in a way that will also support maintaining relative scale in an upcoming release.

That said, as far as I know this has only affected the scale and non-proportional scale tools. From your post it sounds like you also noticed a change in speed on move and rotate, did you also observe a change in behaviour in those tools?

Thank you,

Mitchell

No. Rotate and move don't have the same issue. They are fine.

Not really sure if I understand why the scale tools were changed. I'm sure it was for a good reason. I just don't remember having multiple objects scale at a different rate. If they didn't I would have to zero transform them. Except for when I am in a construction plane view. Different story there. I have to zero transform and then group the surfaces/curves together one to three time to get them to scale normal to the construction plane.

Thanks for the explanation.

Right, the change was to avoid needing the zero transform or group the objects. There were cases where one picked object would scale so much slower than another that it seemed like scale was not working on that object. Essentially, it used to be that for two objects to scale together, they had to have the same x,y,z scale values, or be grouped. Of course grouping or zero transform may still be required if the objects were created in different construction planes to make sure they scale along the desired axis.

Thanks for your input, the video you provided will be helpful for testing.

Hmm. I'll keep a watch for that.

For fun I did create a curve, copy and pasted it, rotated it about 20 degrees. When I picked both curves and tried to scale them in the x direction the went in there own directions. Once grouped or 0 transformed they both then scaled in the x direction.

Is the fix only for the ratio of scale or direction too?

Good point. Objects still scale in their local axis. The fix was only for the ratio. We were focusing on scale, rather than non-proportional scale when we worked on this, so that didn't come up. To my knowledge an option for "Global" or "Local" axis transformations, like we have in Move, has not been requested for Non-proportional scale.

Hi Steve,

quick question, is the ability to scale "through" the pivot point, over to the other side, of any use for you? Due to conflicting behavior with another customer reported issue, this behavior has not been restored. Is that an issue for you?

Thanks,

GG

Hi Michael,

Not to me. I actually prefer for whatever I am scaling to not pass through
the pivot I give it. If I want it to go past I would rather type -1 (which
I do a lot which seem to be much more finicky now).

Thanks for reaching out Michael,

Steve

Hi I am wondering if this was ever implemented (i.e. the mouse sensitivity automatically adjusts with zoom factor) as I am seeing the same behavior in Alias 2021.3...

If your talking about dolly ie (ALT-SHIFT right mouse button), you have to click on an object to drop a point-of-interest. Then when you dolly towards the point of interest your "Perspective Gain" will be automatically adjusted to slow down the dolly speed as you approach the POI. If there is no point of interest dolly will use the value defined in the camera editor.
