How to create new section profile?

Hi, I need to create a new profile section, how do I do this? Thanks.

Hello Marceu Heinzmann,

You can use different methods depending on what you want / what you need.

1. If you want a general section (a shape that is not standard): you can create new profile section by "User section" functionality.

You create the section shape that you want in a drawing and then use the command to add it to database.

You can find detailed information about creating a "User section" in the Advance Steel User guide, that can be found in the link bellow (chapter "Special parts, Special sections" --> "User sections", pages 102-107 for English User guide)

2. If you want to add a new section to an existing profile (for example a new Flat section), you will add it directly in the profile database.

Follow the bellow steps to add it using Management Tools. You can use also a dedicated database software, like Microsoft Access.

Open Management Tools (MT)
Select "Table editor"
Select "Open ODBC" button (top-left corner) to open current Advance Steel databases
Select and expand "AstorProfiles" by double-click
Look for and select "ProfileMasterTable"
In the right side scroll to the column corresponding to your installation language (for example "English" for "UK English" installation)
Look for the profile name that you see in Advance Steel (as example: "Flat EN 10058"). You can use CTRL+F option for quick search
In the line where you find this name scroll to the left until the column "TableName" and note the name that appears here (example: "EXT_Flat"). This is the table where you will add your desired section.
In the left side of MT dialog box search for the previous find table name and select it.
Add new line(s) in the table for each new section, following the pattern and parameters from the existing sections. Each section type has its own geometric parameters. For example the Flat type has 2 parameters: h-width and b-thickness.
It is recommended to use your Author for Owner column. You can add new Author in MT - Option page. This will help you during migration to new versions.

I can add to this in that Owner Text column is very important to change to a different value from DSC. When a new version 2016 is released it will be neccesary to merge databases in order to not lose these user defined sections when migrating to a new release. If the Onwer text remains as DSC the merge is not completed correctly as it presumes that this section has been updated by Autodesk.

Thanks for the response, but when I create a new profile to a existing profile, should I insert all properties like "weight per meter" or "sectional area" or the software calculate automatic? Thank you.

Hi,

You can let these columns not filled and AS will calculate some of them (it will not calculate for example Iz, Iy ...).

However, if you can it is recommended to fill these data, because it is possible to have differences between calculated values and catalog values.

Hi Emanuel,

I can follow your explanations until step 5 (ProfileMasterTable) but couldn’t find the column corresponding with installation language.

Can you explain to me how to find that column?

Fyi, I am using Advance Steel 2021 (Student Version).

In the new versions of Advance steel there are no country columns in the DB tables.
they changed to separated folders and installs for each country/group of countries

you don't need the language column. This was only needed in the past, if you just fill the column which are there, it is working.

Thank you for your question.

As mentioned above, the Language columns are not used anymore, starting with AS 2018 version.

Instead, you use directly the column "RunName". Please see attached image for reference.

every time i tried to generate from user section i always end up to an error of too many contours.

what do you mean? The note "not defined" means you don't use the numbering command of Advance Steel until now.
Just use the numebring dialog and the element will get a number
