topic Side Exit Ladder in Advance Steel Forum

I am needing to create a left hand side exit ladder with 3 bands on it. The lower band needs to be

at a radius of 1’-5 ½” while the intermediate and top bands are to be at a radius of 1’-1 ½”. I am

not sure how to create an opening in the vertical bars between the intermediate and the upper band

for stepping out of the ladder's cage. I have attached a model and a pdf.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Greg,

Since there are some many different types of ladders and cages, with different request, you would not be able to use a joint completely.

So, the recommendation would be to work like this:

Use the "Cage ladder" joint / parameters as much and as far you can. The idea is to get as close as possible to the final result.

Then explode the joint (delete the grey cuboid)

Then continue your work directly on the created elements, create new elements & processing if needed

One advantage is that Advance Steel works with "real" elements and "real" processing.

As long as you know what is the final result, what beam or plate or bolt you need to get in the end - you can create it manually and finalize the project.

Please see attached your model where I have done some steps further using the joint parameters.

Then I have copied the entire ladder and deleted the grey cuboid.

You can work further on the second model - to cut the bands to create an opening, to modify the existing elements to get the same shape and dimension as in your pdf.

I hope this will help you.

Best regards,
Emy

Ok, I can do that but now that I need to do some adjusting to get the ladder as close as possible, any change I make to the properties in the joint properties box, the gray box turns red like it is an unexceptable entry. Can you tell me how to fix this?

Can you just shorten the bands from the top end using the shortening tool from the Tool Palette? You could keep the intelligence intact this way. I modified the model you provided to show what I'm talking about.

Hi Greg,

As you probably know, when the joint cuboid became red it means that the joint cannot be created using the current parameters.

In your case it means that there is a parameter / option that is not compatible with the rest of the options.

Indeed, this is a general answer; I would need more info to be more precise.

I am not sure on which model you are working. I have tried to change few parameters on my previous model and it seems to work, no red cuboid.

If you still had this issue, you could try to work with the model that I have sent you.

Alternatives:

- to "play" with the parameters, to find out which one creates the issue.

- or you could create the joint again from the beginning. Then modify the parameters as you need to get closer to the final result

I hope this will help you.

Best regards,
Emy
