To be honest, I seldom can get it to work, but that is most likely my incompetence. We just assume things to be simple and they seldom are. Those pickets in our screencast had originally aligned to an arc. We had to individually drag their end grips to the arc because we couldn't get trim/extend to work there either. Then they change their mind and want pickets on a slope and you see on screencast our efforts.....

Hi muleman

From what I can see you are using the tool correctly. It looks like because the intermediate sections are all different lengths it is giving you an odd output.

I have used this feature in the same way as you in the past and haven't had this issue How were these sections created? Is there a feature turned off on these?

I have attached a screencast showing how it should work.

Hope this helps

I have had issues when choosing to extend to Face option. When extending to System line there were no problems.

I'm OCD about having the system lines connected so trim/extend to system line is my first choice. Then join the elements with one of AS commands.

if you want to extend the beams to the face, the beams are all not adjust to the face of this beam. So later on you had to cut them, too
Because you have to cut them, it's equal to what point you extend them, so I use everytime the opportunity to extend them to the system line. This have a big other benefit, if you use export files like PSS or CIS/2 to send this files to static software, it's important, that system lines are connected to each other.

I would use the system line opition virtual every time as the boundary reference. So with this the picket infill bars are trimmed to the system of the handrail/mid rail.

Then use the cut at object tool on the features palette to cut back the body of the picket to the handrail face.

This is a joint, so you should be able to use the joint copy tools.

For reference if you look at a standard handrail macro, this is how it creates the pickets.

As Seb says, system line to system line is always a better solution.

Hi,

Looking at the video and taking the fact the pickets have been previously adjusted, I suspect they already have shorten features on the ends. If they have then the system line of the beam is being adjusted correctly by the trim/ extend tool but then the shorten is being applied to the new length.

Try selecting the pickets and changing the Display Style to Features (Advance Properties or Change Presentation Type on the Quick Views Palette). Make sure the pickets do not have any Shorten features on the end.
