My design for San Diego’s harbourfront focuses on creating a vibrant, sustainable, and interconnected community. At its core is a central spine that seamlessly links various areas within the site and extends to key neighboring sites like the harbor and stadium. This spine is more than just a pathway—it's a dynamic lifeline that fosters interaction and connectivity, ensuring a cohesive urban environment. The architectural layout includes a range of spaces, from a landmark high-rise hospitality building to intimate market stalls at the waterfront promenade. Commercial areas are strategically placed on ground floors to activate the site throughout the day, preventing dead zones and encouraging a lively atmosphere.

The design also addresses key environmental considerations, such as noise mitigation, daylight optimization, and microclimate control. By adopting a closed building block typology along busy roads, the design shields inner courtyards from noise pollution, creating tranquil spaces for residents and visitors. A hierarchical organization of building heights optimizes views and daylighting, stepping down towards the southeast to ensure that courtyards receive ample natural light. The layout is further enhanced by thoughtful microclimate strategies, such as stepping down volumes to avoid downdraft effects and allowing cooling breezes to circulate. Strategic placement of trees and innovative shading devices improve thermal comfort, making the central spine an ideal space for outdoor activities. Through the integration of tools like Autodesk Forma, this design offers a data-driven response to the unique challenges of the site, resulting in a sustainable and human-centered urban experience.
