On mobile versions of SketchBook, if it crashes, you may lose work. I would save often or 'version/progress' of the file. Use the following workflow....

To save a copy or version a file on the Mobile platform:

a. Start Sketch
b. Go to Gallery and start a new Sketch, It will ask you to save the file.
c. Go to the Gallery and start a new Sketch again and it will ask you to save the file.
d. Open the first Sketch and work on it.
e. Go to Gallery and start new sketch and choose the "Save as a Copy" option.

I have had an image and all of it's layers deleted twice on my sketchbook. It had over 15 layers so I could easily switch expressions on the character's face and I had saved it multiple times and had previously switched between files without issue until these instances occurred. These images were the original file and it's recreation. I spent over 20 total hours working on these files and I'm in tears because I know I saved it on multiple occasions and I didn't save over it, I checked. Is there ANY way to retrieve the file or at least a way to prevent this from happening on SketchBook in the future?

Once a file has been saved, I would backup file.

All sketches are local to the device. You need to back it up manually:

On Android, it's pretty easy, just copy the files from /Autodesk/SketchBook3 and copy it to your desktop computer. You can use the desktop version of SketchBook to complete our work (www.sketchbook.com/thankyou)

To re-import the file, you need to do this:

https://www.sketchbook.com/help/knowledge-base/back-files-settings/
See: How to import SketchBook files from an older version into the latest version SketchBook for Android
