There is an xref hotifx for AutoCAD 2015. You mention that AutoCAD 2015 is up-to-date so you probably have Service Pac 2, which is good. Try instaling the Autodesk AutoCAD 2015 SP2 Xref Hotfix:

http://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad/downloads/caas/downloads/content/autodesk-C2-AE-autocad-C2-AE-2015-sp2-xref-hotfix.html

Here are all the 2015 downloads in case you would like to get other hotfixes:

http://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad/downloads?release=2015

There is a "See more" link on the right to expand the list of hotifxes. Be sure to look at the readme for each hotfix for installation instructions.

Hotfix installed - problem still exists. What now? After this hotfix failure, I went back and did an installation repair on all pieces of the Building Design Suite we subscribe to with FULL tech support subscription. Redid this "hotfix" - doesnt work - problem still persists. I did a "reinstall" from the control panel - verified the DLL - replaced it with the one provided. Still no joy. Problem persists. Its been 11 days of transferring files from server to local as the work around. Any other suggestions?

So the error message is very specific and can only and truly be fixed inside the TOP file by repathing the XREFs. I'm not sure any 'hotfix' is designed to do that for you.

How does the user PC read the folders on the Server, and what is the OS on this new server?

BTW, if you want Autodesk support, whip out a credit card and select the level you can afford with the features you need http://www.autodesk.com/support-offerings/overview

Hi Barbara,

Since you have subscription support with us, and this forum thread went for three days with no solution (i.e., no one clicked "Accept as Solution" on any post), a support case was automatically created in your name in our system. That is how I came to this thread!

In your last post you mentioned that you have contacted Autodesk Support. I don't see another support case under your name. Do you have a case number? You should have recieved an email back after submitting the support request. I'd like to make sure it came into our system correctly and also make sure two of us over here are not working on the same thing. You did ask a couple posts ago how to contact support. I am wondering if you got into our Customer Care departement instead of Technical Support.

Back to the issue you are dealing with... I think that a Mac server is going to fall outside the realm of supported environments. Take a quick look at this article:

http://knowledge.autodesk.com/article/Support-for-non-Microsoft-networks

Keep in mind that just because something isn't supported doesn't mean it won't work. However, you may get intermittnet functionality, or even perfect functionality for a time and then sudden failure and vice versa.

What version of Windows is on your computer?

Would you describe a quick step-by-step that leads to the "dwg file not found at current location" error? Is it right when opening a drawing, when opening the xref palette, a baloon pop-up, or when in the xref palette and trying to re-attach a file? Getting a screen shot from you might help.

Try testing the following to see if you can prove functionalithy and pinpoint the problem:

Is it only your workstation that cannot access xref files on the server?

Are you able to xref files on your local hard drive?

Are you able to xref files at a share on another workstation?

If you move files to a different folder/directory on the Mac server, can you get to them there?

If the server is doing any type of mirroring, see if you can turn that off and test again.

1. We run 1 pc based computer + several mac based in pc emulator mode full time. All systems are encountering the same problem.

2. Yes. We can XREF from local drives.

3. Yes. We can xref from other drives locally and from certain projects on the server.

4. I've created several test folders onto our server for testing. I did this from indivisual operator workstations. New project folders allow xref's. Everything I've tested from scratch works without a glitch.

5. Yes the server is mirrored. Testing that today/tonight.

Everything is pointing towards a server permissions error with the MAC server.

I've toggled users permissions to test things and the new folders work fine.

Its the established folders that have the issue. I cant figure out why they worked before then suddenly stopped on all workstations seemingly overnight.

I have isolated the folders on the server that have the xref issue.

I will copy the trouble folders in a temp directory (test them again) as well as make new ones there (test them again today) and see if the mirroring is the issue tomorrow morning after the backups are completed tonight.

Thanks for the list of things to check. Looks like its more of a MAC server issue than a Autocad software issue seeing as I can create new folders and have no problems with x'refs.

Still awefully frustrating having to work around this issue for 2 weeks and keep up with the workload. lol

I'll have it tracked down by the end of the week. I will post and mark it resolved when its fixed.

Oh, when we try to xref: We get a balloon pop-up

I've realized that all of our 2014 projects have lost the ability to xref. Some of our 2015 projects can not xref. (this is where I became aware of it)

All new created folders today can xref. Keep in mind I have installed the Hotfix along this threads process.

Bear in mind that an Apple server is an unsupported platform... IIRC that setup uses a SAMBA variant for connecting to windows clients, and SMB has some issues with the wonderul world of Windows AutoCAD.

Suggestion no 1 -- did Apple apply any hotrixes/patches/updates to your server? Can you roll them back to a date when things worked?

Suggestion no 2 --instead of mapopoing drive letters, can you Xref via UNC naming?

Suggestion no 3 -- get a Windows box to netowrk your Acad files.

suggestion no 4 -- sounds like connectivity is getting dropped. that may indicate some network infrastructure issues - possible a switch with intermittent problems, a questionable cable, mice in the walls gnawing on the cat5.

Error still exists. 1. No hotfixes that I've been informed about. 2. Really want to avoid UNC naming for xrefs. Not sure how that will effect working with consultants. 3. I'm considering asking for a windows server. 4. Everythings wireless. But I'll check infrastructure issues over time.

This problem is a BIG impediment to drawing production. I cant express how dissapointed I am in AutoCads Service subscription that we pay for.

No resolution in sight. Still working around the issue.

OK, I'm not going to fault Autodesk or not fully supporting Windows AutoCAD workstations and a Mac OS server. That's just too rare a combo to hti the radar.

Are you using relative paths for your Xrefs? Anf if it fails to accept relative paths, can you manually edit the saved location to be a relative path?

Then, the drawing files that are being referenced are in the same folder as the dwg that is using them as reference files?

If that fails to find the Xref, then my conclusion would be that Windows AutoCAD and Mac OS servers just do not play nicely together anymore.

Best (permanent) fix would be to get a cheap windows box, with fast ethernet and drives, and migrate your CAD dwgs to that box. Set that to backup to your MAc server, and keep on keeping on.

Would have been nice to know these were overlays 3-weeks ago when you started this thread.

So an Xref overlay is not part of the master file like Xref attachments: so how is AutoCAD finding them if there is no path, are all files in the same exact folder as the master file?

In the XREF command pop-up palette, overrlays have paths to the file in the FOUND AT section at the bottom: same as the master file?

I have to agree, it seems your MAC based server is interfering here.
