It sounds like you may be using dynamic input. Don't mistake the default input capabilities with AutoCAD limitations. You can almost always enter 3D coordinates, whether they be absolute or relative and whether they are rectangular, cylindrical, or spherical. Don't rely on tab keys alone. Use the coordinate separators that make sense (either comma or less than symbol) and the prefix that makes sense (#, @, * or none).

Hello,

I'm sure this is something simple that I am just overlooking, but how do you force [or simply toggle] the entry of a 3D coordinate (x, y, z) instead of 2D coordinate (x, y) or polar (magnitude, angle)?

The current way I have been accomplishing this is to enter my command (move for example), enter my reference point, then move the cursor around until I see the 3 dimensional format (x, y, z) and quickly press a number on my keyboard to "lock" into the 3D coordinate system. I know that I am making this much more difficult than it is intended to be.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

First, thank you for the advice and quick response.

Yes, you are correct, I have been using dynamic (tabbed) coordinate entry. If I'm not entering the coordinate there, where would I input the coordinate? I understand that if I wanted something at the origin the correct syntax would be #0,0,0 I just don't understand where to input that data

Thanks

When you key it in, it is accepted. When you tab, there won't automaticaly be a third coordinate box but after you key it in, you can tab between 3 coordinates. The default for dynamic input second point entry is relative. That doesn't control whether it is limited to 2d but tabbing will only get 2d coordinates. You can turn dynamic input off if it confuses you.
