Hi There!

Very new to CAD and teaching myself as I go. I've looked for solutions to this problem on the forum and youtube but nothing seems to make sense. So if anyone can explain this in layman terms would be appreciated please bare with me, I've tried including as much info as I can.

System -

Macbook Pro OSX

Autocad 2017

What I need to achieve -

Be able to export GPS co-ordinates from my CAD to use out onsite to markup using equipment similar to this Geomax Zenith 15.

The issue -

I started the CAD without planning on using a GPS; it's only something that has recently become an option to us. Does the plan need to start with this intention? Also does everything need to be an object to work with GPS co-ordinates?

My relevant Questions -

1. Do I need to go to site to collect reference points or can I just use google earth?

2. If I can use google earth or similar how do I import this data? (I've already created the CAD and built a scaled site on it)

3. How do I then relate the existing items within the drawing to reference the imported GPS co-ordinates?

4. How do I only export the GPS co-ordinates for the items I want to mark-out? (I can figure out the uploading to the GPS unit just not how to select only what I want.)

Sorry, but you cannot do that from Plain Vanilla Cad. From your description, your workflow is 50/50. Fifty percent Cad program and 50 percent Coordinate System.

For the first half, you'll need the geospatial capabilities found in either Civil 3D or Map 3D which can relate your drawing entities to its accurate location on planet earth, which many consider to be the 'heart' of GPS. Both of those Cad versions can interpret, as well as utilize 'known coordinate systems' when drawing and/or importing objects. For the last half, you'll need a rudimentary understanding of geodetic datum.

If you can get some GPS data points in world coordinate format (typically a property boundary break points), 2 at the least, you should be able to import them into your drawing and move/rotate/scale your design on the two known locations.

Unfortunately, you are using an Apple OS, which does not support Civil 3D. If you were on Windows you could look into getting Civil 3D and many more options open up including coordinate systems that you can use that will allow for easy lat/long conversion that helps out in the field.
