Hi all,

I'm stumped on an issue with Autocad 2011 that I've not been able to solve, despite extensive Googling.

I know it's a very old version but the user needs it as it interfaces with some in-house software.

On launching Autocad an error box pops up saying:

"Unable to run AutoCAD. This may be due to one of the following reasons:

1) This version of AutoCAD was not installed properly. In this case you may wish to reinstall AutoCAD.

2)You do not have sufficient rights to run AutoCAD"

It's Windows 10 64-bit and I'm using the 64-bit version of Autocad.

The user is a local administrator on the machine and I have also tried running the application as an administrator, but that makes no difference.

I've uninstalled and re-installed. I've removed all versions of .Net and then tried a re-install. I've also then re-installed .Net and tried again. None of this has worked.

Has anyone got any other suggestions which I could try?

Many thanks!

Hi @Anonymous,

I see that you are visiting as a new member. Welcome to the Autodesk Community!

The problem is likely that AutoCAD 2011 is not designed to run on Windows 10. If that is the version required to interface with other applications then I suggest you either install it on a Windows 7 computer or install a virtual machine on your Windows 10 computer so you can run Windows 7 too.

Here are the system requirements for AutoCAD 2011.

There are 2 other laptops with Windows 10 and Autocad 2011 which are the exact same make and model as this laptop too.

Many thanks,

Dominic

Hi @Anonymous,

While it might be running on the other laptops, they will likely fail at some point too. I see many customers that have been able to keep their older versions running after an in-place upgrade to Windows 10 but most fail due to driver issues or Windows updates. If you need this to run and be stable I suggest you consider my previous suggestions.

What are the applications with which it needs to interface? Perhaps they can be upgraded to a newer and more current version to work with current AutoCAD.

HI Dean,

Thanks for the reply and for the information.

I agree with you completely that it's not sensible to be using software that is not supported on a certain platform. Believe me, if it was down to me then we wouldn't be using such an old version of Autocad on Windows 10. Unfortunately the voice of internal IT staff (like me) gets overruled by staff in higher places, who don't really know about IT but insist we have to keep using Autocad 2011. It's frustrating but as an IT Support technician, I'm used to it.

The issue I'm left with now is that the error is only affecting one user and there are at least another 5 users all using Autocad 2011 on Windows 10, so this user will not agree with me saying that Autocad 2011 doesn't work with Windows 10 as she sits next to 2 people who are currently using it! I'll find some way to explain it to her.

Thanks again!

Dominic

HI @Anonymous,

I can certainly understand reluctance to move to new product if the exiting one is working fine. I would wager though that at some point the other installations of AutoCAD 2011 will cease to function properly on Windows 10 and then the whole shop will be down.

In my opinion, merely hoping things will continue to run forever is not a great business strategy. I wish you success in your discussion with management.

If 2011 is where they want to stay then Windows 7 is the a great operating system for it to run in. I suggest that might work until it is time to upgrade hardware or you need to start sharing files outside the company.

Thanks John!

I am in full agreement with you that remaining on old versions of software is a very bad business strategy. To my concern, it's not just Autocad, there are several other pieces of software which are in use that are extremely outdated. I only joined this company less than a year ago and I found an entire culture of 'if it still works let's not update' which is incredibly risky, and as you have said, sooner or later we will be in trouble. I'll do what I can to politely move them in the right direction! All the software controlled by IT is up to date, it's the teams who work with their own in-house created software which are the issue. There is only one product which requires Autocad 2011 thankfully, lots of others require 2014 though, which is also no longer in full support on the ADN network. We have got 3 developers who are starting to test with Autocad 2018 thankfully!

Anyway, you don't need to hear about my IT support woes

Thanks for all your help with this.

Hi,

>> at least another 5 users all using Autocad 2011 on Windows 10

There is one aspect not discussed yet (sorry if I overlooked that).
It does not necessarily mean that Windows 10 is equal to Windows 10 ... because first Windows 10 release is very different to Anniversary update which is again very different to Creators update.

So please verify that all workstations are running on the same version of Windows 10

Also drivers (especially graphic card drivers) are behaving different with Windows 10/update1/update2 ... make sure you have a driver installed that is designed for that subversion of Windows 10

And the worst news: with every new Windows 10 update the risk raises, that also the other AutoCAD 2011 users can't work any more.

Maybe a bad comparison (for the risk) but you are using a set of car wheels from 1990, the tire gets hard more and more, but every time you get a new car you mount these old wheels ... so it's not a question of "will you crash" ... it's a question "when will you crash".

That's the same working with software build for Windows XP now on Windows 10 ... every new update would create headache if I would be admin.

Hi Alfred,

Very good point! In fact, on an unrelated matter we found yesterday that not all workstations had received the latest updates to Windows 10 from SCCM (which is managed by a different team but I do work with them). I haven't checked yet as the user with the error has been out of the office, but I suspect she is on a later update version that the other users who are still working. If that's the case, then all the other users will stop working once the SCCM issue is resolved! I'll look into that this morning.

I like the analogy with the car, and you're right that continuing on with old software means that sooner or later things will grind to a halt.

Thanks for your help and advice All the best,

Dominic
