One of my clients is creating assembly instructions via AutoCAD and then they are exported to PDF. Unfortunately the resulting PDF is not accessible to users of assistive technologies such as screen readers unless a manual and labor intensive process takes place to add tags.

Does AutoCAD have a feature that will add tags to the exported PDF?

Thanks for your help.

Hi @Anonymous,

I see that you are visiting as a new member. Welcome to the Autodesk Community!

Can you show ma an example of a PDF with tags so I better understand what you are looking for in AutoCAD?

AutoCAD can provide hyperlinks but I imagine you are referring to something else.

Do the readers look for specific types of data? If so, are they standard metatags? Once it finds a tag, what does it do next?

Sorry for all the questions but I am a big proponent of accessibility and I want to make sure I understand the issue properly.

Thank you @john.vellek. I appreciate it.

Basically, what that means is that we want to have a PDF document that is properly tagged for those users that are using assistive technologies. That images have alt-text, that there are headings, that the reading order is set properly. I am not expecting AutoCAD to generate accessible PDFs but I am rather wondering if some of the later version have settings that will recognize images and text and not export all of the elements as an image.

Does that make sense?

Here is a good link Create and Verify PDF Accessibility

Hi @Anonymous,

These are all interesting features that would involve some work if performed manually.

Since most drawings from AutoCAD are going to be comprised largely of vector data, there shouldn't be too much to do in that regards. Text can already be written out to be searchable and scannable (one has to select the fonts properly).

To my knowledge there is not a way to currently set the language in a PDF from AutoCAD nor is there a way to change any security settings.

Reading order would be tricky as AutoCAD is not a linear means of documentation (if I am expressing myself clearly). Obviously if there are multiple pages that are in the resulting PDF, they show the pages in the Pages window of Reader.

Color can be a big issue too as most documents are likely to only be monochrome. Linework / lightweights can be controlled in AutoCAD but would have to be intentionally set to certain values to provide enough contrast for accessibility and then might not work of the broad audience.

I guess I would really need to see the specific drawings that are being exported. I looked in the AutoDesk App store to see if there are any utilities that could this but in my quick glance I didn't find any.

If you like, you could provide me with a concise "hit list" of accessibility features that could be adapted into AutoCAD PDFs (keeping in mind that most are architectural or engineering drawings). I think this would be a great product feature request that would be a great addition.
