To have dimensions not show up in modelspace they have to be drawn in paperspace but they will not shop up in the correct location if you move your model

You could draw them in modelspace but you cannot override the visibility to thaw it only in the viewport.

You might consider working in a base file and then xrefing it into a"master" file where you could add the dimensions in modelspace there. You will still have to make sure that if the model moves in the original file that you adjust the dimensions in the "master" file too.

Dear Mr.Harald

Go to the corresponding paper space and use the command "CHSPACE" and select the view port were you want to add the dimension.

After completing the work come out of the view port using the command "PSPACE"

Hence the dimension drawn on the paper space will not be reflected back in model space.

Hope this could help you

Regards

Di****h

Hi,

>> At the same time I do not want the borders of the paper space viewports to print out.

Set the viewports to a layer that has "Plot" set to false.

>> If I dimension in paper space only, the dimensions to not "follow" when

>> I pan the objects in the viewport

It's a hard job for AutoCAD to have the dimensions in paperspace following objects in modelspace, it would be critical to the points of geometry that are then outside the viewport area ... or, unsolvable, if you change the viewpoint to another 3D-view/perspective. So think about dimensions in modelspace, it's just layer thaw/freeze you need in modelspace if you don't want to see dimensions in modelspace.

However if you use command _PAN or command _ZOOM instead of the middle mouse button/mouse wheel the dimensions in paperspace will follow geometry in modelspace (as long as possible and as long as set to be associative).

HTH, - alfred -

Hi Harald,

This is a specialty of mine. Many users will do everything they can to direct you away from Paper Space dimensioning but I WILL NOT. I teach my students this method after presenting all of the basics in model space. The guiding principal in my class is "Models in Model Space and everything else to Paper Space." This is THE ONLY MTHOD useful for the latest 3D modeling and "Base View" features that were added in 2012 (2013 version).

Rules to guide you...

Finish the model before leaving Model Space. You can make changes after dimensioning and Paper Space setup but work to the fullest extent possible.

Go into your Paper Space layout and set it up as much as you can. You can change layout settings later but do as much as you anticipate.

Border/Title Block

Print Settings (controls white paper background)

Viewport/s sizes and shapes (if not 3D Base views process)

Double-click inside of each viewport and zoom-extents or zoom-objects to fill the viewport with the target entities.

Set the viewport scale for the viewport while active in the viewport.

Double-click outside of the viewport to de-activate working in the viewport (if you do not the any objects you create will exist in Model Space)

Dimension your objects as you would normally, making sure that every dimension is connected to the model points desired (not tracked from points or connected to other dimension or Paper Space objects already added.

If you need to adjust positions of your model your dimensions may not always follow perfectly if done in the active viewport. Instead, just MOVE the objects by going back to the model space tab and returning to paper space to verify that the dimensions followed (small adjustments hopefully).

Be aware...

The old style Centermarks and any centerlines added for dimensioning are not associative dimension features and will not move or adjust with modle changes. The individual Centermarks do not follow viewport scaling even though the ones added for diameter and radius dimensions do. Use the new Centermakr and Centerline commands for 2017 version if you are able.

Also consider using the new Dynamic or Smart Dimensions added in 2016. This new method takes some getting used to but I like it so far.

Sorry so long but if your gonna try to work in this way I hope to help you get going as cleanly as possible.

Forgot to mention... DO NOT XREF to accomplish this method of dimensioning for day-to-day work!

Cheers,

Blaine
