Hi all,

I'm running ACAD 2016 on Windows 7, using a Nvidia Quadro K600 Graphics card.

I work a lot with point clouds (using the Kubit Pointsense plugin). When working in anything but WCS top view I have fairly regular crashes where ACAD freezes and the only way to get going again is to use Task manager to dump it. It does not autosave or give me any kind of save option - basically I've lost all the work since my last autosave (which I've now set to 5 mins). I have adopted a modus operandi which minimises the fuss, but it's really unacceptable.

The error logs in windows do not provide any useful detail. Can anyone suggest any way to diagnose the issue or know of any fixes?

Many thanks,

Andy

Are you running an Autodesk driver for your video card?
http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/syscert?id=18844534&siteID=123112

Or do you need to turn off many or most of the GRAPHICSCONFIG command settings to calm it down perhaps.

Thanks, Pendean, for your response - I think you've helped me in the past (something about shademode...).

OK, I've downloaded the most recent one reccommended by the Autodesk page you posted (driver dated 03/12/15) I'll see if that helps.

I'd updated the driver recently, but I guess it was not an Autodesk driver that I'd used.

Can you tell me if I turn off Hardware Accelleration will it affect the speed of my manipulation of views (panning/zooming etc...) when working with point clouds? I've been reluctant to touch it for that reason.

Thanks.

Hello @andrew and Welcome to the Autodesk Community!

It's ok if it's not on the Autodesk list it can still work, just not verified. If your driver is updated I wouldn't worry about performance issues unless you go over or underkill with the hardware settings. Only worry if your driver's last update was over 2-years. Feel free to share your autocad performance settings and we'll guide you in the right direction.

by-the-way Andrew, I'm Andrew too

Point Clouds are taxing: only you will notice if turning off hardware acceleration will have much impact on your PC.

Did you ever get the problem resolved? I see no issues in the image. Make sure all your drivers are updated and supported.

Well, because I'm using some new plugins (Undet for manipulating point-cloud data) I occasionally get crashes in various situations. I really have neither the time nor the inclination to fully explore any more intermittent crashes. I'll just live with a less-than-perfect software and suffer the occasional crash - which is liveable using regular autosaves.

I do know that there are some bugs in AutoCAD that are apparently accepted by the plugin programmers - they have created workarounds to avoid the issues (e.g inbuilt coordinate manipulation to stop screen spazz-outs when working in GPS coordinates and on elevation UCSs). That does seem a bit plastering over the cracks, but I'm not going to waste any more time doing Autodesks beta-testing for them.

Yes, I'm cross. And, yes, I'm probably cutting off my nose to spite my face...

Thanks for your input, Wisp.
