I'm curious about some behavior I don't recall seeing before AutoCAD 2020. I'm trying to use the DIST command to measure from a node perpendicular to a line. This is what I typed in and what appeared on screen

'dist

Specify first point: _nod of

>>Enter new value for ORTHOMODE <0>:

Resuming DIST command.

of {here I clicked on a node}

Specify second point or [Multiple points]: _per to {here I clicked on a line}

Distance = 0.6982, Angle in XY plane = 270d55'7" {and so on}

What I would like to know is, what's AutoCAD doing where it says

>>Enter new value for ORTHOMODE <0>:

It doesn't seem to interfere with the command, I'm just wondering what's happening?

I tried a new blank drawing and I saw the same results, but on further investigation I found out that the mystery message

>>Enter new value for ORTHOMODE<0>:

only appears when I use a keyboard shortcut for _nod. It does not appear when I type in

_nod

at the command line. In the CUI command the properties for that particular keyboard shortcut are:

General

Name    Node

Command

Description Snaps to a point object

Extended Help File   [blank]

Command Display Name    NOD

Macro    _nod

Tags    [blank]

Access

Key(s)    CTRL+SHIFT+UP

Advanced

Element ID    ID_OsnapNode

This keyboard shortcut was imported from a partial CUI file I created in AutoCAD 2007 and imported into AutoCAD 2020. Weird, huh?

You may wonder why I have set up such an odd keyboard shortcut. It is so I can use the 12 buttons on the side of my Razer Naga mouse. By a series of macros I created in the Naga mouse software, combined with keyboard shortcuts in CUI, I can map the 12 buttons to various commands and osnaps, and a different set of commands and osnaps when I hold down the Shift key and press a button on the side of the mouse, and a third set of commands and osnaps when I hold down the Alt key and press a button on the side of the mouse. Sounds complicated, but it works great and saves me a lot of time and effort when drafting. The best part is fast access to osnaps without moving the cursor on screen.

Yes ... ;)))

First I would like to know:

Does the keyboard shortcut send this ortho-setting only when you send this via mouse or also when you send this from your keyboard. Then we know if we have to play inside AutoCAD CUI or with your mouse settings or driver.

That's a good clue; it doesn't do that ORTHOMODE setting when you type in CTRL-SHIFT-UP from the keyboard, only from the mouse. The idea (according to the documentation for the mouse driver) is that the mouse is supposed to emulate keystrokes as though they were keyed in from the keyboard, but apparently AutoCAD can tell the difference between CTRL-SHIFT-UP from the keyboard and CTRL-SHIFT-UP from the mouse driver. Odd!

Hi,

thank you for verifying and confirming, as the keyboard works correct it's more an issue of the mouse settings or driver. Maybe you can look inside forums for this mouse to find similar effects.

At least sorry, I'm out here, - alfred -
