We received a Microstation drawing from a client that we converted to AutoCAD format. The Microstation drawing has several x-references.

After completing our drafting work in AutoCAD, we converted the file back to Microstation format. In the conversion back to Microstation, the x-references no longer appear. In other words, when we open the drawing back up in Microstation, we have no x-references.

Looking over the 'Export' menu in AutoCAD, I don't see any options that would enable the allowance to include x-references (please see attached).

Is there a way to include x-references in the conversion? Thank you.

Is it a mapping/pathing problem?
Are they detached, or removed altogether from the top file?

I don't think so. Putting the Microstation drawing I started with aside, I selected any old AutoCAD file that had a set of x-reference files.

When I export said AutoCAD file to DGN format, the x-reference files don't appear in Microstation. I toggled through all the export options too in AutoCAD's 'Export' menu, but the x-reference files are simply not binding to the newly created DGN file. Noting, I'm not too familiar with how x-references are framed in Microstation.

I'm scratching my head trying to see why the files are not binding together in the conversion.

I'm sorry for missing the other questions; please see below.

1) Is it a mapping/pathing problem? I don't think so. In AutoCAD the x-references are referenced to the drawing I'm converting as is typically done. Only question I have is, maybe when you export a file there's another methodology involved when going from DWG to DGN.

2) Are they detached? The newly tested CAD files have the x-references all attached.

3) Are they removed altogether from the top file? No, they are not removed in AutoCAD, but in Microsation they are not under the top file (if I'm understanding you correctly).

Thanks again.

So you might try a Microstation Support forum for issues within that program https://communities.bentley.com/products/microstation/f/microstation-forum

But I will assume if the xref files are loaded/present in the top file, then you either have a layer off issue, the xrefs need to be reloaded (think AutoCAD's unload option in XREF, but the reverse), or they are out of view (you have a floating element too far away from your content).

Thank you for the speedy response.

It's not any off layer issues or anything being out of view. The x-reference files simply do not appear in Microstation after the conversion.

I'll test the Microstation forum as suggested.
