Saving DXF files generated from a canvas sketch hangs Fusion 360 although we are able to save the project file without a problem

Hi,

Our school students sometimes download an image and then trace the image in a canvas on Fusion 360. On trying to save the resultant sketch using right click save as DXF function it shows us the spinning wheel and eventually times-out. This does not allow us to exit from the save function and we have no choice but to close the application and start again. The odd thing is that the sketch is quite a simple sketch (not complex) but it just will not save. We can however, save the whole project and I have done so opening it on another higher spec PC but the same issue occurs when trying to save a DXF file. Fusion is probably not the best tool for sketching around an image but I wondered if anyone had also experienced this and if there is a work around or a fix?

Hi @airRPT2H When you do this, is Fusion running locally or are you using Fusion Online for this task?

Do you have a file that gives you trouble that you could share here?

Hi Kevin,

Running fusion from the desktop as normal (client server mode I presume).

I have attached the file in question. It is a Fusion project file and it is the first sketch at the top of the list. I confess I have not had time to look at the student's work in detail so it may be something they have done. Although, I did have a quick look, and the sketch seems fine. If you try saving it as a DXF it crashes the application (times out).

I'm attempting to create the DXF file from the sketch now. I suspect the issue may be that there is just too much detail for Fusion to export the sketch. I'll let it run for a while to see if I eventually get a dxf from the export. I will also share this with development.

As a potential alternate workflow. You might have better luck using a graphics program like Inkscape (free) or Adobe Illustrator, Or Corel Draw to trace the image in those packages. You could then export as an SVG and then bring that SVG file into Fusion for use there.

i Kevin,

You are right, there are other applications more suitable for the purpose of tracing such as Adobe illustrator or a product we use in the UK known as Techsoft 2D Design which does automatic tracing of bitmap images. I think this is the way we will go.
