New screencasts not capturing AutoCAD commands

Screencasts that I have done this week have been prepared on the site without the typical available tracks at the bottom (command, dialog, system variable). I have been using AutoCAD MEP 2017 as AutoCAD. Is it not supporting AutocAD 2017 MEP as AutoCAD? It does capture the keystrokes.

This means that none of the command data is searchable.

Looking more carefully during the Screencast Recording session, it clearly states that AutoCAD 2017 MEP Educational is not supported and that "This app won't report command data". I have filed a bug report. Hopefully I am wrong. It has captured the command data on the commercial version. I have no idea why there should be a difference.

What is the problem?
When using Screencast, it has become apparent that AutoCAD MEP 2017 is unsupported by the current version of Autodesk Screencast V2.3. It will not report command data. This seems like a major flaw if the intent of Screencast is to help the community use the most recent Autodesk software.

What results are you seeing?
Screen and keyboard events but the timeline is not searchable and there are no tracks for commands, dialogs, system variables or files related to AutoCAD.

What were the expected results?

AutoCAD and its verticals should be fully supported by Autodesk Screencast.

Hi,

When the Screencast Recorder reports that "This app won't report command data", it means, that AutoCAD MEP 2017, wasn't able to load the arx app that does the instrumentation for sending the command data.

To rule out, we installed AutoCAD 2017 education version and were able to record Screencast with the command data (

http://autode.sk/2cx5NKY). AutoCAD 2017 MEP is vertical and should be also reporting metadata.

At this point, I would recommend the following.

Can you please close AutoCAD or better reboot, uninstall the Screencast Recorder and then re-install and give it a try? I am suggesting a reboot before uninstall to make sure, all the resources are released and uninstall is able remove everything.

Thanks @ram.mummidi. I am scheduled to be back at that station next Tuesday and will try then. I did already try uninstalling and reinstalling. There was no effect from that end. Perhaps a reboot. I do have Deep Freeze operating on the computer so upon reboot, the system goes back to an earlier state but I did download and install the latest Screencast before reporting the error.

I turned off Deep Freeze, reinstalled 2017MEP, uninstalled Screencast and reinstalled Screencast, rebooted the system and still it says the AutoCAD application won't record commands when screencast is running. I've also tried it on another computer in the room without success. Apparently, the version of the AutoCAD MEP 2017 program I downloaded (Building Design Suite Ultimate from the subscription center), won't work with Screencast. My Building Design Suite Premium does work with ScreenCast.

Am hoping for a hotfix.

AutoCAD 2017 and AutoCAD 2017 based verticals all should report metadata (commands, etc) with the Screencast Recorder. Our QA tried out installing AutoCAD 2017 MEP and had no issues reporting metadata. Also here is a public Screencast created with AutoCAD MEP 2017, that reports metadata looks like was by you, based on the name:

This was created using AutoCAD 2017 MEP. So what version of AutoCAD 2017 MEP do you have now? Can you please share the Screencast with me, so that I can investigate a little in the database. Also I see you mentioned, you downloaded it from the Building Design Suite Premium.

Can you also please send me the version info from the registry for this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Autodesk\AutoCAD

For AutoCAD 2017, you should R21.0.

Do you see anything different?

I have reported the matter through the subscription support process. The conclusion was that the Building Design Suite Ultimate (Educational Version) that I pulled from the subscription site was flawed. They are aware of the issue and have commented but there is no fix in sight. I expect that I will have to do screencasts off-campus until next year since the deployment affects every computer on my campus.

It has been marked Bug 1011. I can send you a private message with Adesk personnel emails but don't want to post them on the forum.

Has there been any progress on this? I am not able to have command data reported for AutoCAD Architecture 2017. I uninstalled and deleted registry entries and any remaining folders/files on my machine, and then reinstalled (ScreencastSetup_V3.0,exe, dated 10/4/2016 - which may be when I last downloaded the installation files). The situation remained the same. The Screencast Plugin panel shows on the Add-ins ribbon, but selecting the Launch Screencast tool results in an error message at the command line: _CHRONICLE Unknown command "CHRONICLE". Press F1 for help. If I run Screencast directly, it says the app will not support command data.

AutoCAD MEP 2017 does not have an add-ins tab at all, nor does it have the CHRONICLE.cuix loaded as a partial customization file. It also does not report command data. AutoCAD Architecture and AutoCAD MEP 2015 and 2016 "support Screencast" on my machine. AutoCAD Architecture 2014 supports Screencast, but AutoCAD MEP 2014 does not. Revit 2014, 2015 and 2016 all support Screencast (I do not have 2017 installed).

It would be nice to get command data from AutoCAD Architecture and AutoCAD MEP 2017. I can live without having it for AutoCAD MEP 2014.

None on my end. I use AutoCAD MEP 2016 at school or AutoCAD MEP 2017 at home, which was part of a different suite. The Ultimate Design Suite 2017 version is flawed. The Building Design Suite 2017 version is OK.

Both of my 2017 installations (AutoCAD Architecture and MEP) here at work are from the Building Design Suite Premium. Neither has played nicely with Screencast.

Sorry to hear you are having trouble recording command data. Based on your screenshot, it looks like the plugin for AutoCAD and its verticals is not being loaded. I would have recommended the usual steps to reboot, uninstall and also make sure you delete the following folders

C:\Program Files (x86)\Autodesk\Chronicle

C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\ApplicationPlugins\Autodesk Chronicle.bundle

C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Chronicle

Also delete the Screencast Key from the HKCU\Software\Autodesk

But looks like you have done these steps. So if the above steps didn't work for you, is it possible for us to get on a call and share your screen with me to see what is really going on?

I said I was using BDS at home, but, like you I am actually using BDS Premium 2017 at home and it is working there. Something is going on at your installation. Autodesk admitted that the BDSU 2017 had issues so I am stuck there. It's just too tedious to reload 17 machines with another suite just for that functionality.

I'm having the same issue with the screencast not recording command data from the AutoCAD. In this case, I'm using regular Civil 3D 2017.

I'm new to screencast and I think it just didn't install into the program at all because I'm not seeing any new tabs in the ribbon. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but it still doesn't work. I think I had C3D loaded the first time I tried to install, so maybe that messed it up.

Has anyone had any success getting this to work after this error?

I thought by now, they would've fixed it. My screencast has been upgraded at least once and now is supposed to support 2018 but the BDSU 2017 did not support screencast for the AutoCAD verticals.

It is interesting that it seemed to record the keystrokes this time and have an option to display them in the window by the cursor. I thought they would show up in the timeline down below, but they don't seem to.

Screencast still tells me that "This app won't report command data", and I don't have any tabs in the ribbon for it if it is supposed to have any. I think the first time I made a video I unchecked the "Capture Keyboard Events" option since the program was telling me it couldn't capture command data anyway, but maybe that's only half true.

IMHO ..

a) Can you create a Screencast with pure Autocad and a screencast with something else (Notepad, Word, ..) to compare the results?

b) I Ithink there is a difference between "keyboard strokes" (recorded nearly for every software) and the "command data".

c) And there is a difference between keyboard strokes (displayed in the screen) and mouse-clicks on Icons or on different software, displayed in the bar beneath the video.

There doesn't seem to be a solution on this discussion. Did anyone get any progress with this?

I am having the same problems with the app not "reporting command data" and the Unknown Command "CHRONICLE" issues.

I already uninstalled/reinstalled multiple times with no luck.
