Hi-

I'm having trouble controlling my pen weights both as they show in paper space and as they plot.

I created a Plot Style Ctb file with a gradations of pen weights associated with the pen colors.

I select this when I am trying to plot.

All I see are two different pen weights and they are too crude to have the drawing appear correctly.

I do have the pen weight visibility icon checked on.

I do have the pen weight set in paper space layer as well.

I notice that the pen weight choices in the ctb file are not the same as the pen weights that are selectable in the paper space view port settings. Maybe something there?

The weights appear differently if I change them in model space but that makes it impossible to draw. I used to be able to do this but some things has changed.

Advice? Can you recommend a good YouTube on this? Pretty stuck - thanks for any advice.

- Megan

I do have the

Hi Maxim,

Thank you for replying earlier. ** NOTE ( I am sending this through this forum as it seems that the email replies do not go through?). Also, the screen shots are detached from the comments I am trying to make about the image.**

Here are the screenshots to try to illustrate what was happening, per your request:

(there are a few more to try to better illustrate what is going on)

1) Here is a SS from model space of the different layers and pen widths I am trying to use. Each line is drawn in the desired layer, with an associated color in model space, with the layer name written adjacent to it and the pen width that I hope to use with the layer as set in the ctb file that I created.

2) Here is a SS of the ctb file. As an example, you can see that I have selected a line width of 0.1500 mm to be assigned to Color 2 or Yellow.

3) You asked me to clarify why I could not draw in model space if the line widths were NOT set to default in model space. Here is an image of them in model space where the line itself was changed to a different thickness. The heavy lines sit over other lines and obstruct the drawing.

4) Below in the following two images, you can see what I meant by the pen width offerings vary between the adjustments one can make through the paper space view port settings, and the pen width offerings one can select in the ctb file.

The series in the Paper Space setting arrays as follows

( .002, .004, .005, .006, .007, .008, .010, .012, .014, .016, .020, .021, .024, .028 .031…) IN INCHES

The series in the ctb file choices array as follows:

( .05, .09, .100, .1300, .1500, .1800, .200) IN MM

HOW TO MAKE SENSE OF THIS? For drafting, I was accustomed to using a range of metric sizes from a double aught to a .2 mm for typical drafting of architectural things.

But despite the differences, I used to be able to get this to work in Autocad for YEARS and now I can not.

I have tried checking and un-checking the line weight icon in Paper space, per your suggestion.

I can not find any basic instruction that seems to apply online or in You Tube.

I am limited to 3 images so hard to explain it all...

I appreciate your help.

best,

Megan

I appreciate your help.

best,

Megan

##- Please type your reply above this line -##

It is a session wide all-tabs all-locations-in-a-dwg-file on/off switch, there is no built-in "only do it here but not there" option. That's always been the case, no variation in earlier year versions. Perhaps back in the day you relied on "display Plot Style" setting for your layout pagesetups, and not actual LWEIGHT settings?

Hi Megan,

I looked at the drawing you shared and, to say true, I don't see problems with lineweights when printing to PDF. From the point of view of line thicknesses, everything looks quite correct.

Maybe you have some special requirements, but I don't know them. Please provide additional information - attach resulting PDF, for example.

Another things are:

1/ The problem with displaying line thicknesses on the screen in Model space. It can be solved by disabling the display of lineweights as I wrote earlier.

2/ The problem with lineweight units in Plot Style editor - yes there is a bug in AutoCAD for Mac since 2013 (it is impossible to show lineweights in inches in it) and this bug is still not fixed

Hi again Maxim,

-continued thanks here-

SO, based on your earlier comments, I decided I would ditch my custom ctb file and just use one of the Autocad standard ctb files. I tried both the monotone and the Acadlt.ctb files.

Then I went in and I isolated and clarified the line weights in a series of layers I might like to use. I had a range of between .13 mm to 1.58 mm. I set these line weights in both model space and paper space and I am very aware of the icon toggle. That did turn what I had on and off.

I am still not having success. I have a pretty wide range of line weights and yet I get such little expression of the difference. Oddly, there is more difference showing when I have tiled into the model space then anything I can see in Paper space. I have attached screen shots to demonstrate the problem. For example between .13mm, .20mm, 25 mm & .30mm there is no visible difference. Then it jumps up. Again, between .35, .40mm, .50mm,.70mm, .80mm there is not a visible difference , and so on... I do notice a bit of shifting when I zoom in in and out.

I use paper space to see what my drawing will look like when I ultimately print a plot or a pdf, I think like most users.

With the attached screen shots showing the different views and situations, do you notice how the stepped gradation of thicknesses stops showing more than maybe 3 weights when I tilemode to Paperspace?

I’m on version 2023 and I think there is a newer version. Thoughts around this and an upgrade?

Thank you again,

Megan

Hi Megan,

The lineweights you see on the screen in the drawing area are just a rough preview and are still dependent on the display resolution. That is why you do not see the difference in the gradations of the lineweights, which have a similar thickness, and the lineweights are displayed in jumps.

This has always been the case and does not depend on the version of AutoCAD.

You can see the real lineweights only on hardcopy (depends on printer/plotter physical resolution) or in PDF output (Preview button in Print window).

Hi Maxim,

Ah that feels correct. Perhaps I had a better monitor in the past then? I work mostly off my Mac laptop now where I used to have a substantial Mac desktop with unparalleled graphic resolution...

Please believe me that when I worked in Paperspace in the past it was so much more nuanced and easier to view what one might get as an output.

Thank you again,

Megan

Is there perchance any resolution settings to the Paperspace viewport windows?

Thank you for your patience with me, and continued support.
