I have a situation where I create an xref file early in a project. Let call the base file "File A". This is Xref'd into "File B" which is the main drawing file.

Inevitably what happens is the project evolves and the items in file B move and adjust. Then they obviously move in File A and I have to go back and move and adjust all x-clipped Xrefs in file A. Its time consuming and requires management and time.

Is there a way to lock the xref to something other than 0,0,0 world UCS? Like a data point or lock a UCS to the File A drawing?

Any insights from anyone would be appreciated.

Thanks @maxim_k

This is not quite what I am trying to do. I am trying to lock the insertion point of the xref to a line or point on the inserted drawing.

Very simplified explanation of what is happening:

1. "dwg B" is xref'd into "dwg B"

2. dwg B has a 1x1 box drawn in it

3. I insert lets say at 0,0,0 as required. 0,0,0 of each drawing aligns perfectly. the box sits nicely in the corner of a room to the bottom left of the room, with a wall horizontally and vertically from point 0,0,0. I clip the xref so the rest of the drawing is not visible and I have a nice neat insertion. So far so good, everything lines up and is clipped correctly.

4. 1 month later the client changes something, and the box becomes 1.2 x 1.5 in size but gets bigger to the left i.e. negative X co-ordinate direction, and down - i.e. negative Y co-ordinate direction

5. when I update the xref, I need the bottom left point of the box to be in the same position, but the box is now not aligned with the UCS of dwg B due to the size change. When this updates in dwg A, I then have to move and adjust the xclip so that the bottom left of the box is still locked to the same position in dwg A.

6. While I understand the box can be moved in dwg B before updating the xref, this is the same as moving and re-clipping the xref in dwg A and either way is laborious with multiple complex drawings. Is there a way to insert and lock the two drawings so that no matter what I do in dwg B, the insertion point always relates to the box (or block if that works better) bottom left corner. No matter how much a adjust the box.

Hopefully that makes sense? Perhaps it is a little too advanced or complex for AutoCAD....

@abitofcad AutoCAD has no ability to lock content in place that overrides any other user's ability to unlock it and move/resize/bump/tweak/change UCS of that content. None. Each user has total control all the time regardless of what other users wish to do.

Perhaps that is what you are trying to fight / struggle with? Looks like your struggle started with you #4, a common challenge when edits to files are done by others. You and your client might need to coordinate more closely together.

Best solution would be for you and your client to agree about what your basepoints are and need to remain 100% of the time.
