Thank you for the response. I have submitted a feature request through the send feedback option.

I am aware of numerous programs which can convert PDF to DWG, however my desire is to simply created accurately scaled markups on existing PDF documents without the degradation inherent in rasterization upon output. It seems to me that the PDF could be be passed through the whole process unmodified, with the AutoCAD line work added on top as a PDF layer when printed.

This is exactly what I am doing currently with Illustrator, but takes more time than is necessary due to the need for manual registration. Perhaps its easier to use a dimensioning/scaling plugin for illustrator and do away with AutoCAD all together...

Is printing a PDF underlay as vector linework possible? if so, how?

My goal is to insert a vector PDF as an underlay into AutoCAD for Mac 2016, draw my content, and then print / plot or export the file to a new PDF retaining the original PDF linework as vector. I assume this should be possible, as AutoCAD has no trouble parsing, displaying, or snapping to a PDF underlay, correctly interpreting the vector geometry. However, any method in which I attempt to output a PDF file inevitably converts the PDF underlay to raster, which looks terrible and/or increases file size.

I have tried printing, publishing, and exporting. I have changed the PDF underlay clipping, monochrome, background colors, and dpi settings. I have changed the viewport display settings. I have used the AutoCAD export function, the save file as PDF option, and created a dummy printer driver to plot to file. Help, or at least put me out of my misery by confirming this is not possible.

Thanks in advance

Welcome to Autodesk Forums!

Hi,

No, it is not possible.
You need some other application (convertor) which can convert vector pdf to vector format readable by AutoCAD - DWG, DXF. Than you can use converted data in AutoCAD.
For example, Illustrator can convert PDF to DWG / DXF.

BTW, AutoCAD 2017 for Windows can import PDF as native AutoCAD vector data.

Maxim
