Hi Jose,

At first I want to mention that fields workflow is absolutely identical on Mac and on PC (with some exceptions I mentioned earlier), so we speak about fields in AutoCAD (regardless of the platform on which you use it).

If you are new to AutoCAD and want to use Fields in it, I think you need to learn more about fields from books, video tutorials, on-line help topics:

Here are some links:

http://docs.autodesk.com/ACDMAC/2013/ENU/filesAUGMac/GUID-B6F95CAF-5A39-4C33-96EE-7E5BDD50F7B6.htm#WSC30CD3D5FAA8F6D816B13C7FFC2D66033-7FE1

(I use 2013 AutoCAD help documentation, because AutoCAD for Mac 2014 and 2015 on-line help seems to me extremely poor and full of mistakes)

I believe that in the MS versions of Autocad it is possible to define user fields that will show up when using insert fields. I cannot find any way to do this in the MAC versiion. The closest workaround is to create a non visible single line text object and then insert the field as object->properties->contents. I havent figured out how to make this auto update yet though.

Am I missing some simple method?

Hi,

You can use FIELD command in Mac version of AutoCAD the same way as you do this in PC version, at the same time you can not create some types of the fields on Mac (such as Hyperlink, BlockPlaceholder and some others - this is a limitation of Mac version).

Could you explain your workflow on Windows? Please describe in more details what you want to accomplish?

Maxim

Thanks
I can bring up the Insert Field window from the command line or the button
on the upper menu that shows when a text object is being edited. I do not
however see any control to allow me to create a new field. I get the
enormous list of predefined fields but the + button that MAC OS normally
shows to add to a list object is missing.

I am relatively new to autocad but I believe that people working in the PC
environment were able to make user fields.

The workflow I am trying to set up is to create a drawing where the same
specification is referenced on multiple sheets, to avoid the error of
changing it in one place and not another I want all references to actually
be to a user variable so if I change that all references will correctly
change. A global update fields command would be helpful too, it seems to
be necessary to use the update field command on each layout.

BTW while editing a text object the only way to issue the insert field
command is from the context menu that appears at the top. The command line
and the insert field button on the annotate toolbar do not work. I assume
this is because I am in the middle of the Mtext command and that would be
issuing another command?

Jose Torre-Bueno Ph.D.
VP R & D
Empowered Energy Solutions
(858) 292-6100
(619) 977-0553 (cell)
CA Contractor B. 932346
jtorrebueno@empoweredenergysolutions.com
www.empoweredenergysolutions.com

More on using the contents of a text object as a field:

Strange behavior on using the contents of a single line text object as a field in another text object. I have two text objects which both have a field that uses the content of another text object. These two objects are on different layouts. If I change the content of the source text object the fields on other layouts update immediatly but a field on the same layout only updates if I issue the FIELDUPDATE command or leave the layout and return. Apparently displaying a layout causes all fields to update.

Thanks, it turns out custom properties are part of the project not part of the drawing. As far as I can tell there cant be custom objects without associating the drawing with a project.
