I have a problem with rendering old files in max 2020.

I'm using a default scanline renderer and in max 2019 it's still very quick but when opening the same file in max2020 it needs like 20x more rendering time! What i can see is that the raytrace renderer is calculating over and over again with each line that is being rendererd instead of one calculation per rendering as it does in 2019...

Does anyone have an idea of how to solve this?

THX Frank

@Anonymous

Great to hear from you on the forums! I am curious if you are able to pass along a scene file you are experiencing issues with, I can send you a private file sharing link via PM if you would rather not have your files public.

What other elements are within the scene besides materials, geometry, and lights? It could be that a particle system was reworked in the newer version of Max and needs to be remade, or a similar issue.

I'm looking forward to helping narrow down the cause of the slow rendering issue, but need a little more information 😄

Talk to you soon!

Hi Hagen.deloss, thx for your reply

Attached you'll find two screenshots i made rendering the same max file.

The main issue seems to be that the raytrace engine in max 2020 needs to calculate again with each line rendered (default scanline)

The elements in my drawing are quite standard, just some standard materials, mappings and lighting. i'm not using any plug-ins or particle systems.

Does this help?

@Anonymous

Interesting, I think it would be most helpful if I could test a sample scene that you are encountering this issue with, as I am not experiencing any issues rendering between my 2019-2020 scenes. Feel free to attach a scene to your next message, or send me a private message with a filesharing link.

Have you tried disabling Raytrace, or lowering the Ray Depth Control within your 3ds Max render settings?

Let me know of either of these options work for you, I look forward to hearing back!

This is Mental Ray related. Our problem is in scanline only.

@Anonymous

I really appreciate the video, and additional information!

I can reproduce this issue with the test scene you have provided.

Currently the scene you provided has a standard material with a raytrace property assigned to it. i opened it and tested a few things in Max 2019 and 2020, just to be thorough.

I assigned a Raytrace material to the objects. The test render had the same slow render speed in Max 2020.

I attempted to assign a physical material with a high metalness setting to the same effect as well.

I then recreated the scene in Max 2020 and assigned the same above raytrace materials and properties, to the same slower render time.

It may be that raytrace in scanline may be slower in 3ds Max 2020, but i wont know anything until i test more.

I will see if my colleague experiences the same, talk with someone in QA, and keep you updated on how those conversations go!

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner! It looks like the Max rendering team has looked into this, and a fix will be included in a future update to 3ds Max.

I will update you when that is released 😄

Hi @Anonymous

I believe this issue has been resolved in 3ds Max 2020 update 2, would you be able to confirm this while rendering in your specific scene?

Hope you are doing well 😄

Hi Hagen,

That's great if the rendering problem has been fixed. Unfortunately, my company decided to discontinue Autodesk maintenance last month due to the price increases, so I don't have access to 3DS Max 2020.2. If the fix isn't going to be released as a patch or hotfix to 2020.1, I won't get it.
