Illegal Patch

Im following a tutorial on making a retro telephone. It tells me to use Patch deform on a helix to I guess patch it to a line. When I select pick patch, I get the error message "Illegal Patch". The point is to make the line and the helix fuse so it looks like a retro phone cable. The tutorial tried to use the spacing tool but it did not work. How can I get Patch Deform to work in this instance?
