Hi all!

Just wanted some feedback on my first model in 3ds Max. Looking to learn 3d and thought I would start with a passion of mine! All modelled and textured within 3ds max. I added some text to the table and the scoreboard in photoshop.

Honest thoughts welcome!

Thanks

Ben

Really nice work! What renderer did you use?

The only suggestions I have would be to make the hue of the felt on the table less lime green and more of a darker true green Also, the legs that are lit look a little too similar and clean. However, maybe these small points reflect only my personal experience as to what I have seen with pool tables. Again nice work.

Cheers mate!

I used Arnold to render as dont have Vray however Arnold seems brilliant. Again this is fairly new to me so Learning as I go.

Yes I did think that about the cloth colour and played with lighter and darker greens so many times that I think my eyes couldn't work out what was better haha.

Yes I agree with the whole model looking too clean but as it was my first I didn't want to dive in to adding imperfections in the materials just yet. Maybe next time although my original idea was a dingy sort of club setting with a worn table.

How would you add these imperfections if you dont mind me asking?

Thanks for your comments. All taken on board. 🙂

Thanks Shatki!

I used CM to model this as I wanted a accurate dimensions for the table itself, so this part I know is accurate. What is the benefit of using unit over cm so I know for future? How does it stop stretching?

I like adding the human model for judging scene sized so will remember that. Just quick question If using units and you want a 6ft human. Do you treat 1 unit as 1 cm?

The lighting was all Arnold lighting mate

@Anonymous

Maybe next time although my original idea was a dingy sort of club setting with a worn table.

How would you add these imperfections if you dont mind me asking?

If you have Substance Painter then I would go that route for adding imperfections, grunge scratches etc. But if you don't and just want to stay in Max for this, then you can achieve the same/similar results with a bit more work. The basic approach is to use a composite map in the diffuse map slot (or any other slot you want) of your starting material (and choose "Yes" to the prompt to keep old map as a submap. Then you can overlay as many layers of grunge as you like by adding a layer to the composite map and then masking that layer (Black = transparent, White = opaque, grey = in between based on value) with either a procedural noise map or a hand painted one (as long as you have UVs.

You can also get fancy with the data channel modifier and use a curvature map to drive the grunge. Check out the following:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cFHN19_uZU

http://www.neilblevins.com/cg_education/vertex_map_wear/vertex_map_wear.htm

Hope this helps.

@Anonymous

Did you find it hard starting yourself?

Nope, I was driven to do this for reasons I cannot explain. People ask me the same thing about playing guitar: "Is it hard to practice?" I respond, " No, I actually can't put the **** thing down". Same with computers and 3D graphics (and 2D graphics) for me. It's a joy. No rhyme or reason.

Do you do it full time?

Depends on your definition of full time. On the average, between 6 to 10 hours/day.

Where did you look for clients?

I don't look for clients. I am fully engaged in a personal project ( a feature length movie) that I wrote some years ago and am now creating content for.

Like I say, I can't really provide you with useful specific information based on personal experience on how to break into this business if you want to be hired by someone else. But I wish you all the best in your journey. If it inspires you and you are genuinely excited to learn new things every day, then it's really just a question of time.
