Depending on what you need to do later with it, you can consider to make a complex tileable material with some permutations and with bump maps on mind, to turn flat surfaces into brick walls with defects (as long they will be superficial and you dont expect to make holes on it) making such a material with very high quality could require some time, but will be a nice solution and will give you good results and the chance to work with low polys instead use different brick high quality polys and placed one by one (or with modifiers)

The individual brick pieces used to create a building/wall could be interesting for some things, but looking at thing like MassFx that also allows to project a brick pattern into low polys to simulate destruction you could even achieve this kind of objective with similar results but keeping it "light"

I'm hoping to step up my modelling and try some fantasy structures but am unsure how to create old, crumbling bricks without going into ZBrush.

I'm aiming to do something like this https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2265804 or https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3901266

Any recommended modifiers or plugins? Or is it something that has to modelled brick by brick?

@Anonymous

Any recommended modifiers or plugins? Or is it something that has to modelled brick by brick?

It depends on the degree of manual control you want, ie. placing damage in specific spots. But check out this voronoi fragmentation script. I have used it create some crumbling walls in a scene and it worked well enough for that purpose.

http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/fracture-voronoi

At least it'll give you some broken geometry that you could place and then model the more whole bricks with poly modeling and vary them with a noise modifier and tweaking different strength settings. Get a variety of bricks from mostly regular to fragmented that way. Hope it helps.

Hey thanks for the reply, sorry I should have clarified that this if for 3D printing.

Ohh yeah then I dont think the bump mapping is an option.. maybe something like heigh-maps could do it.. but still you will over with too many polygons I guess (however, well, Its not that bad since you are not going to render it... ussually 3d printer slicers manage well the 3d models so it may still be a way)

To show the concept a bit:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rw1c_duc4Cg
