topic How to export 3DS Max with file with bump maps to STL in 3ds Max Modeling Forum

I have a pretty simple 3ds max file that has some bump maps and I need to export it to STL for 3d printing/fabrication. Any ideas how to do that? When I export to STL the bump maps don't stay in the file and I just end up with smooth model without bumps. TYIA!

You would have to use the bump maps as displacement maps so that they actually modify the objects shape. Here's the general workflow.

In your material, move the bump map to the Displacement Map attribute. If the material doesn't have a displacement attribute replace it with one that does like the Physical Material

Add a "Displace Mesh Binding (WSM)" modifier

Enable "Custom"

Since displacement actually modifies the mesh you will most likely need to increase the subdivision to get fine details
