1. Reset 3ds Max to Default Settings

Backup Preferences:

Before resetting, back up your custom scripts, user presets, and plugin configurations.

Reset to Default:

Close 3ds Max.

Navigate to the folder:
C:\Users\[Your Username]\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsMax\[Version]\[Language]
Rename the folder (e.g., append _backup).

Restart 3ds Max. It will recreate the default settings.

2. Verify V-Ray Plugin Installation

Uninstall and reinstall V-Ray:

Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features and uninstall V-Ray.

Reinstall the correct version compatible with your 3ds Max version.

Ensure you download the plugin directly from the Chaos website to avoid mismatched versions.

3. Check for Conflicting Scripts or Plugins

A script or plugin may have altered the core files of 3ds Max:

Navigate to:
C:\Users\[Your Username]\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsMax\[Version]\Plugins
or
C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max [Version]\Plugins

Temporarily remove non-default plugins or scripts.

Restart 3ds Max and test importing 3D files.

4. Inspect the Imported Files

The issue could also relate to the specific 3D files:

Try importing a different, verified 3D file.

Use File > Import > Merge instead of direct importing to test.

5. Perform a Clean Reinstall of 3ds Max

Fully uninstall 3ds Max:

Use the Autodesk Uninstaller tool to ensure all components, including registry keys, are removed.

Manually delete leftover folders from these directories:

C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max

C:\Users\[Your Username]\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsMax

C:\Users\[Your Username]\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\3dsMax

Reinstall 3ds Max and avoid adding presets or plugins initially to test if the issue persists.

6. Update Graphics Drivers

Ensure your GPU drivers are up to date. Compatibility issues can occasionally cause instability.

7. Verify System Requirements

Ensure your system meets the requirements for your version of 3ds Max and V-Ray.
