Give it a try. In practice it can be a bit tricky when you cannot see the object you want to select from the current view, but there are other ways to select a light among other objects it might be hidden behind. For example, you can use the Selection Filter and select lights (see image below). Then when you click in the viewport only lights will be selected. When done selecting, remember to return selection filter to All.

More generally, another way to help selection in scenes with crowded geometry is to toggle wireframe mode on(F3 is the shortcut). This lets you see through geometry and hover the cursor over an object until it is highlighted and then you can select it.

When you are done selecting the object toggle back to shaded view if you want. I generally just toggle wireframe on when I want to select an object in crowded scene geometry as I find that the quickest.

in Revit, i can (use tab) and it will cycle through all the selectable objects within close range of my mouse pointer.

(so say from top view, a light above some casework, I "tab through" to select the object I need")

rn, I can't select a light in the model. just the objects around it. does 3ds max have a tab cycle?

many instances and can't find that specific on in the layers.

cheers to all!

-mda
