Snap objects that's on the same level

It has struck me that I'm quite often looking for behavior like this. A feature that snaps to an object which is on the same level:

I've played around with the alignment tool Grid and snap settings but none is similar to the one above.

Any suggestions?

You can use Max's 'Snap' settings to do nice snaps on just one axis like you show. Before moving/snapping just click on the axis you want so that you isolate it. Then grab the center circle around the axis indicator and snap to your other object. There's a learning curve but play with it and you'll get it. It's very handy.

Cool, glad it helped you. There are a lot of things you can do with it by moving the pivot point, etc. Play with it and I think you'll find it useful.
