I've just re-installed max 2015,after a computer rebuild. The only change since I was working on my old computer is installation of extension 2. Perhaps my problem is due to extension 2.

Problem: with a very "default" installation, I employ the move tool to reposition a vertex. Differently than before, when I put my mouse on the arrow to select the axis of preference, a yellow line forms from the original position of the vertex and the mouse cursur, and as soon as I drag the mouse, the vertex jumps over to the mouse cursur. How annoying. I expect the vertex to begin moving from its orginial position, not the cursur position.

Its like a snap is on, but it isn't. All snaps are off.

Anyone recognize this behavour? Can it be turned off, very distracting having the vertices jumping around.

Mouse is a wireless logitech trackball.

In the screen shot, the mouse cursor doesn't show, but understand the original position of the selected vertex is the origin of the move tool axes, and the position the vertex has jumped to was where the mouse cursor was when I began to drag. Imagine I was going to move that vertex to the left, how distracting to first have it jump to the right.

Just started fresh and the select and move tool were back to normal. Sure wish I knew what I'd activated, but I'm also glad its gone!

The Yellow line is a visual aid - Grid and Snap Settings dialog > Options tab > Display Rubber Band.
All the Snap options may be off but the Snaps themselves are on. Press "S" or click the Snaps toolbar button. I just tried it here and it's absolutely consistent:- no Snaps, no odd behaviour, Snaps on and the behaviour returns. Whether this is EXT2 related I couldn't say - doesn't seem any different to me, but I normally work with with snaps on so the fact that it "jumps" a little is irrelevent (to me) as it will still snap to the nearest vertex/edge/whatever as expected.

[edit] Glad you fixed it 😉 [/edit]

THanks for your response, Steve. I agree this was a snaps behavour. What I can't figure out is how snaps were "on" as the toggle buttons for snaps on the tool bar were inactive.

As complex as this tool is, the most simple questions can be mysterious.

Usually, some twitch makes me press an errant key, producing some hotkeyed event I never planned on!

Bob

I've seen that kind of thing before - option ON but button not "pressed". Been a long time though - many versions ago since I last saw that happen.

You can probably go into customize user interface and scroll down the list until you find "Snaps." I believe that, by default, snaps is set to the hotkey "S"

You could easily find the hotkey in the customize user interface menu and change it to something like "shift+s" so that you don't so easily press it?

But then the Toolbar button would have been "pressed" giving a fairly hefty clue that Snaps were turned on. Unless it wasn't in which case that would be a bug...
